October 2023 Book Releases

I feel like October is the last big release month of the year! The amount of books coming out on October 3rd is wild.

October 3rd

I listened to an ALC of Starling House and it was my first full novel from Alix E Harrow and I loved this! If you are like me and you love when a house is a character in and of itself that is certainly the case in this story. It was so well done and has only grown on me over time.

I also had an ALC of After the Forest and it was unlike anything else I have ever read. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about a Hansel and Gretel retelling but it really worked for me, especially since it takes place twenty years after the events of the original story. It was so interesting to see how that event affected these characters and their relationship. It was super atmospheric and had some memorable side characters to say the least!

Out There Screaming is an anthology edited by Jordan Peele- yes, that Jordan Peele! There are some incredible authors contributing to this collection including P. Djeli Clark, Tananarive Due, N.K. Jemisin (!!), Nnedi Okorafor, and Rebecca Roanhorse. Also, from that I can tell, the audiobook is narrated by all of the contributing authors!

Edenville sounds like the movie Pleasantville but make it horror. The premise alone tells me that this is something I am going to love. Sunflowers are my favourite flower so seeing the cover has me curious to see how they play into the story as well.

I love to read SciFi this time of year, and The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport sounds unique! The main character’s brother is a monkey bot and that alone makes me want to read this.

If you tell me a book is for fans of Erin A Craig, I am more than likely going to read it or at least look into it. That is the case with Before the Devil Knows You’re Here. Also, I cannot say that I have ever read a Johnny Appleseed/Paul Bunyan retelling!

Curious Tides is dark academia but with teen mages! Not only is the cover absolutely stunning, I have heard some amazing early buzz for the story itself. This is the perfect time of year to read dark academia.

A Haunting on the Hill is the only authorized book set in the house from The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, so that alone caught my attention! You all know that I am always up from trying anything haunted house related.

I have yet to read anything by Ashley Winstead but all of her books intrigue me. I love a good Southern Gothic, so maybe Midnight is the Darkest Hour will be the first of hers that I read.

The Hurricane Wars is already getting a ton of buzz and it does sound like something I will like. I adore rivals to lovers in my fantasy!

I am so excited that The Forest Demands Its Due is dark academia written by a Black author. I adore this subgenre but it can be difficult to find diversity within it.

If I don’t end up absolutely adoring The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch there is something wrong with the world! It has two of my favourites things- Pride and Prejudice and witches!

I know it is October and we want all of the creepy reads, but I am so excited for all of the holiday romances! How cute does Love in Winter Wonderland look? It is like You’ve Got Mail but make it Christmas-y!

I read something by Cassandra Khaw earlier this year and didn’t love it but I am still open to trying something else! The Dead Take the A Train sounds wild and the cover is everything!

The cover for When Ghosts Call Us Home is so weird and I adore it! I love the idea of found footage horror and the fact that this one in particular follows sisters who filmed a horror movie when they were children that gained a cult following!

Everything about The Scarlet Alchemist tells me that is something I am going to love! I haven’t read a ton of fantasy that revolves around alchemy but I love the idea of it.

I have not read The Kingdom of the Wicked, so I don’t see myself reading Throne of the Fallen any time soon, but I want to let you know about it in case you are a fan of this world! It is also her adult debut!

October 10th

I was sent a physical ARC of The Bone Roots and it so pretty! The story itself sounds really beautiful and I have been hearing some good things about it already.

I also have a physical ARC of Wrath Becomes Her. I think it is going to be a heartbreaker but I have realized I like books about golems, so I have a good feeling about this one.

I love witchy stories and fantasy romance but I cannot say I have read a lot of fantasy romances about witches and that needs to change. Of Magic and Men looks like a good place to start!

I think we need some light contemporary to mix up all of the horror and fantasy coming out in October, so I was thrilled to find Stars in Your Eyes. I actually have an ALC of this and hope to get to it soon!

I like a good family story that is told in two timelines, so I think that is why What We Kept to Ourselves might work for me!

I like horror set in the forest, so I think Bittersweet in the Hollow will be perfect for that and will give me the atmosphere that I am looking for!

The thought of a horror about doppelgangers sounds like my worst nightmare and I need to read Last to Leave the Room the moment that it comes out!

October 17th

One of my favourite authors is releasing a new book and I cannot contain my excitement! A Haunting in the Arctic sounds like something completely unique and I just hope it is atmospheric as C.J. Cooke’s past books!

Stalking Around the Christmas Tree is the fourth book in this cozy mystery series! I read the first three books a couple years ago and they helped me get into the holiday spirit, so I am thrilled we are finally getting the next book!

There are so many incredible authors contributing to All These Sunken Souls. It would be so fun to read a short story a night throughout October!

You know I am always excited when Alexis Hall releases a book! 10 Things That Never Happened has fake amnesia, which is something I can say I have never read in romance before!

I don’t know much about Flower and Thorn, but I saw that pink cover and added it to my list!

Erica Waters’ books always have the coolest covers! All That Consumes Us looks so creepy and just screams fall to me!

I know a lot of people adore Adrienne Young and I keep meaning to read more by her. The Unmaking of June Farrow is her newest release and hopefully I will get to it eventually.

October 19th

The Winter Spirits sounds perfect if you are looking to get intot he holiday spirit once October is over but you are not ready to leave the ghosty vibes behind!

October 24th

I have yet to read the first book in this series but I do own it. Just want to let you know that if you are a fan of the series, A Curse for True Love is coming out in October!

October 31st

I have a feeling Tananarive Due will become a favourite author, so I am excited for The Reformatory!

The Rosewood Hunt sounds silly and ridiculous but I think it could be really fun!

  1. A lot of these sound like a ton of fun! Though I have to say… November is the month when two of my most anticipated books of the whole year are releasing, so even though it might not have the quantity that we’re seeing next month, November is probably my most anticipated book release month. 😀
