Let’s Talk About the First 10 Books I Randomly Grabbed from My Shelf

This week’s topic is so much fun! I decided to use a random number generated to decide which books to talk about! This meant that I had to count all of the books on my shelves, which is something I have never done. There are 256 books on my read shelf, so let’s see the ten books the random number generator gives me!

Book #75

Sleeping Giants is the book that made me fall in love with SciFi and is one of the first reviews I ever posted to this blog (and no I will not be linking that… 😂). The story is told through mixed media so it makes for such a unique reading experience. The second book is actually my favourite and I have mixed feelings about the finale. Sleeping Giants taught me that I love books about robots!

Book #157

I distinctly remember reading A Song of Wraiths and Ruin in 2020 at the start of lockdown and it was a great distraction for me! It was also for an online book club and it was so nice to have that community to talk to during that time. This book made me appreciate YA fantasy again and I thought that Roseanne A. Brown did some really interesting things with these characters!

I am a Queer Eye fan (we are getting a new season soon!) and I have been since the original show from the early 2000s, so whenever someone from the show releases a book, I buy it! I listened to Over the Top on audio, which is how I would recommend reading this one if you can. Jonathan Van Ness narrates this himself and does an incredible job. I didn’t know much about his story and their life and I remember crying quite a bit while reading this.

The Romance Recipe is a super steamy, sapphic, foodie romance and I had such a great time with it! This was the first book I read from the publisher Carina Adores and they are now a publisher I pay attention to. I also loved D’Vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding, which is another sapphic romance they published.

Anna-Marie McLemore is one of my favourite YA authors and Miss Meteor is something so different from them but I still really loved it! There is a bit of a SciFi twist to this but it is ultimately a book about female friendship and identity and I thought it was so well done!

Book #162

Blood Scion is one of the most brutal books I have ever read. Don’t let the fact that this is YA fool you because it does not hold back and it was one blow after another. My jaw was on the floor by the end and I cannot wait for the sequel, War Widow, which comes out in November.

Book #182

I say this every time I talk about The Glittering Hour, but this book is seriously underrated and deserves more attention, especially if you are a lover of historical fiction. It is told in two timelines and there is something to melancholy yet beautiful about it!

Book #127

The Ensemble definitely has one of the brightest covers on my shelves and I love it! If you are like me and you enjoy novels centred around the arts and music in particular, this might be a book worth picking up. It follows a musical quartet throughout the years and we see how their relationships change over time. So good!

Book #8

The first section of my shelves is dedicated to Greek myth retellings! Elektra is one of my favourites and it doesn’t hurt that the cover is stunning. Though this book is titled Elektra, we actually get three perspectives in this book and each of them were fascinating. I think Jennifer Saint is a good author to read from if you are looking to get into this subgenre.

I am always happy to have an excuse to talk about Practical Magic! I adore this entire series, though I do think Practical Magic, which is the first book, is the weakest. This is a series that just gets better and better and is the reason why I love witchy stories as much as I do to begin with!
