My Favourite “New to Me” Authors of 2022

I love discovering new authors and I wanted to take a moment to highlight some authors I read from for the first time in 2022 and fell in love with. Some of these authors I have since read multiple books from and others I have only read one book from but want to tackle their backlists and will check out whatever they write in the future.

T. Kingfisher

I can’t believe that I read my first book by T. Kingfisher last year and she quickly became a top five author for me! I mean, it is not often that I read seven books by the same author in one year and enjoy them all! A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking is my favourite, but I would recommend all of tehse. I will say that The Twisted Ones wasn’t my favourite but it still did interesting things. I would recommend starting with What Moves the Dead if you want to try some of her horror.

T. Kingfisher’s entire backlist is on my TBR, but these are the five that I want to get to first, starting with The Raven and the Reindeer!

Helene Wecker

I read The Golem and Jinni and its sequel, The Hidden Palace, in 2022 and quickly fell in love with Helene Wecker’s writing. Sadly, she has not released any other work, but she is definitely an author I will keep my eye on!

Rebecca Roanhorse

I have been meaning to read from Rebecca Roanhorse for years, and I am so glad that I finally did in 2022! Neither of these books were perfect for me, but the world-building was next level and I did appreciate the writing. I am hoping that she writes more in the world she created in Tread of Angels because there is so much potential there!

I believe that Trail of Lightning is Roanhorse’s first series and I have been curious about it! I don’t hear much about it these days, so if you have read it, let me know tour thoughts! Though I had mixed feelings about Black Sun, I am curious enough to continue on with the series.

Sue Lynn Tan

Daughter of the Moon Goddess was Sue Lyyn Tan’s debut and was a strong debut it was!

I cannot believe that I didn’t read Heart of the Sun Warrior as soon as it came out, but I am determined to get to it soon!

Angeline Boulley

Firekeeper’s Daughter is another debut and as soon as I put it down I knew I would check out whatever Angeline Boulley writes!

Warrior Girl Unearthed is Angeline Boulley’s 2023 release and is one of my most anticipated books of the year! From what I can tell, it is set in the same universe as Firekeeper’s Daughter.

Anita Kelly

I adore foodie romances and Love and Other Disasters quickly became one of my favourites! I adored these characters and thought they had amazing chemistry, which is really what I look for in a romance.

Something Wild and Wonderful is Anita Kelly’s 2023 release and I have a feeling ti will become another favourite! It follows these two characters who meet and fall in love on a hike.

Bolu Babalola

Honey and Spice was not only one of my favourite romances on 2022, it was one of my favourite books. There is something special anout Bolu Babalola’s writing and I highly recommend the audiobook for this one!

Short stories are hit or miss for me, but I am confident that anything from this author with work for me. I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of Love in Colour.

Kate Elliott

Unconquerable Sun was a surprise hit for me because I was intimidated by it. This was a good reminder that I do like heavier SciFi and it is a genre I need to explore more.

I have an eARC of Furious Heaven, which is the sequel to Unconquerable Sun. It is almost 800 pages, so that scares me! I received a copy of Court of Fives for Christmas and I can’t wait to read it. The Keeper’s Six is a novella coming out this year!

  1. I love T. Kingfisher, too! And Trail of Lightning is one of my best-of-the-best favorite books in the last 5 years for sure. The audiobook version of it is so good!

  2. Yes to Sue Lynn Tan! 😍 I also enjoyed Helene Wecker’s writing, but haven’t read The Hidden Palace. Here’s to discovering lots more great authors in 2023!

  3. T. Kingfisher is one of my all-time favorite authors too, though I’m avoiding her horror. I’m too much of a wimp. 😉 She’s also quite amusing to follow on social media as well. She taught me all about the lawn crayfish.

  4. Wow! T. Kingfisher has written so much more than I realized! I first heard of her with Nettle & Bone. Looks like I have some catching up to do.
