Currently Reading

I am buddy reading The Golem and the Jinni and it is nothing like I expected it to be, but I am loving it. This book has been on my shelves for years, so I am thrilled that I have finally picked it up and that it is exceeding my expectations. There is something so compelling about Helene Wecker’s writing and there is a lot to unpack in this story. As of right now, I am getting that five-star feeling!
I am listening to an ALC of Not Good for Maidens, which is a Goblin Market retelling. I read Goblin Market in high school and remember being really into it. I am only 10% into this audiobook, but I am already hooked!
Just Finished

Daughter of the Moon Goddess had a great start but then the first half dragged a little bit. There was a lot of world-building where the main character was asking questions and we would learn the lore that way. It definitely became tedious and I can understand why I have been seeing people DNF it before hitting the 50% mark! That said, all the setup pays off in the second half and I ended up really loving this. It becomes more of an adventure story!
Yerba Buena was a five-star read for me. It comes out May 31st and I cannot wait for others to read it! I think it is important to know going into it that, though there is a love story, I would not call this a romance. It is more about these two women dealing with their trauma and feeling a strong pull toward one another. I will be posting a full review soon!
May 31st is a huge release day, as it is also when Love Radio comes out! This is a YA contemporary romance and I had a great time with it. It follows Dani, who is cynical about love and has trauma from an incident that happened the year before the story starts, and Prince, a radio host who gives out relationship advice. There was something so refreshing about this book and I loved that it made a point of acknowledging that falling in love does not heal your trauma- a trope I have come across far too often!
Starting Next

I am participating in the Assassins in April readathon (more info here!) starting on April 16th. I am not typically drawn to assassin stories, so I didn’t know where to go with this readathon. I was looking for ideas and stumbled upon Her Name is Knight on Kindle Unlimited, which follows Echo, who is a highly trained assassin. I am also trying to find an audiobook to listen to, so I would love any recommendations that aren’t SJM or Robin Hobb!

I am so glad you are enjoying The Golem and The Jinni! I am in a similar situation because I have that book on my shelves and I bought it ages ago!! But I hope to read it soon!!
I’m so glad I finally picked it up. It’s pretty brilliant!
I haven’t heard of the Goblin Market before, I’ll have to go looking that up. The cover of Not Good for Maidens is gorgeous!
I’m currently reading The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah and loving it! Here’s my WWW post: https://birdjayreads.wordpress.com/2022/04/13/www-wednesday-april-13/
I am one of the people who DNF-ed Daughter of the Moon Goddess lol. It was beautiful, but just too slow for me but I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it a lot!
I also have Yerba Buena as an ALC and am looking forward to it just because I love Julia Whelan as a narrator 🙂
I saw that on Goodreads and completely understood why you put it down. It’s a long book for it not to pay off until the second half!
Julia Whelan does an excellent job with the narration, as always!
Enjoy your reading!
I’m currently reading Before They Are Hanged and White Smoke!
Oh White Smoke. Excited to see what you think!
They look like good books!

I can totally agree with what you said about Daughter of the Moon Goddess. It was much better in the second half!
Definitely! The second half was much more fast paced.
The Golem and the Jinni have been on my list for soo long.
It was fantastic!!
I’m listening to ‘Daughter of the Moon Goddess’ at the moment. I will admit that I’m finding it a little slow but I’ll keep at it now I know it’s worth the effort!
It’s definitely slow for the first half! But the second half picks up a lot!
