Books That Made Me Laugh Out Loud

I have said this before, but I am not someone who typically likes humour in books. I think humour is so subjective and often does not translate through the written word. That said, there are a few books that made me laugh and had a sense of humour that aligned with my own! It is always a nice surprise when I come across a book like that.

How many lists will The Martian be on today!? There is something about Mark Watney’s sense of humour that just works. I went into this book not expecting it to be as funny as it was. I think that his personality is a large part of why he was able to live alone on Mars. I laughed out loud more times than I could count, which is not what you expect when you pick up a survival story.

Yes, of course duct tape works in a near-vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshiped.

The Humans is funny is a quirky way. It follows an alien pretending to be human, so you see them learning what it is to be human and they point out some of the strange things that we think and do. There is something so charming and hilarious about that!

This was, I would later realise, a planet of things wrapped inside things. Food inside wrappers. Bodies inside clothes. Contempt inside smiles. Everything was hidden away.

The banter between Luc and Oliver is what made me fall in love with Boyfriend Material, and what made me laugh out loud. They are so different, which led to some hilarious moments. I love when romances have a sense of humour.

“You know you’re wearing pyjamas wrong, right?”
He didn’t look up. “Oh?”
“Yeah, you’re supposed to just wear the bottoms, and have them hanging low on your hips, displaying your perfectly chiselled V-cut.”
“Maybe next time.”
I thought about this for a moment. “Are you saying you have a perfectly chiselled v-cut?”
“I’m not sure that’s any of your business.”

The House in the Cerulean Sea is not only the sweet novel but also is quite funny! The children in this book are hilarious and have some great one liners, especially Lucy.

I may have lost my mind,” he told her. “Isn’t it wonderful?

Murderbot as a character is quite funny without meaning to be. The fact that they are so relatable and just want to watch TV makes me laugh. They often talk about how much they hate emotions and come up with some great and quotable lines.

I liked the imaginary people on the entertainment feed way more than I liked real ones, but you can’t have one without the other.

The family interactions within 10 Blind Dates are hilarious and that is because they are so relatable. The whole premise of this book leads to some funny moments. I absolutely adored this book, which I wasn’t expecting going into it.

Is there no privacy in this family?’ Everyone at the table answers, ‘No.

As Over the Top is Jonathan Van Ness’s memoir, it was bound to be hilarious. They have such an incredible sense of humour, and I highly recommend this book on audio. It definitely has some darker moments, as Jonathan has had some ups and downs, but their signature sense of humour can be found throughout.

More families should watch the Olympics together. To me, those are core American family values: Cheering on a corrupt institutional body that’s super problematic with money and opportunity but we all pretend like it’s an equal playing field and celebrate it—what’s more American than that?

Do I have to explain this one? Norse Mythology is a book about Loki- it is bound to be hilarious!

Of course it was Loki. It’s always Loki.

I love a good romcom, and The Unhoneymooners is one of my favourites. A lot of what happens in this book is ridiculous but it is also hilarious!

When I signed up for this honeymoon, I had no idea it would involve so much nudity…

I was so nervous that My Lady Jane wouldn’t work for me because it is relying on the humour. I was worried that it would be too much, but as over the top as it is, I absolutely loved this book. I am still worried about continuing on with the series, as my love for this one could have been a fluke, but I am so happy that I read it!

“No horse jokes,” he said.
“My lord, I apologize for the horse joke. If you put down the book—unharmed!—I will give you a carrot.”
He brandished the book at her. “Was that a horse joke?”
“Neigh.”
“Was that a horse joke?”

  1. I don’t generally like humor in books either, so this tag was hard for me today! But I have Boyfriend Material on my list too, it was the perfect use of humor! And I can’t believe I forgot about The Unhoneymooners, one of my favorite funny CLo books! And My Lady Jane too! So good~ perfect for todays prompt.

  2. Great list! I definitely agree with The Unhoneymooners! I hope to read The Martian soon!

  3. This list was challenging for me today! I’m severely lacking in the humorous books category! I’ve only seen The Martian movie….maybe I need to read the book!

  4. I’ve come across two people recommend The House in the Cerulean Sea in the past few hours, so I think that’s a huge sign that I finally need to pick it up! There’s nothing better than bursting out laughing the middle of a book – love this! ♥

  5. I like a bit of humour in a book. And I agree with you on Unhoneymooners. The rest I’ll take as suggestions for my future reads. Thanks a lot 😊
