My Most Anticipated YA Romances of 2021

There are so many incredible sounding YA romances coming out in 2021- too many for me to read! I am hoping I will be able to get to many of these, but I wanted to take the time to highlight them and put them on your radar.

Quinn keeps lists of everything—from the days she’s ugly cried, to “Things That I Would Never Admit Out Loud” and all the boys she’d like to kiss. Her lists keep her sane. By writing her fears on paper, she never has to face them in real life. That is, until her journal goes missing . . .

Then an anonymous account posts one of her lists on Instagram for the whole school to see and blackmails her into facing seven of her greatest fears, or else her entire journal will go public. Quinn doesn’t know who to trust. Desperate, she teams up with Carter Bennett—the last known person to have her journal—in a race against time to track down the blackmailer.

Together, they journey through everything Quinn’s been too afraid to face, and along the way, Quinn finds the courage to be honest, to live in the moment, and to fall in love.

The synopsis is giving me both To All the Boys and Simon Versus vibes, and I cannot wait. I am fascinated by books that have a social media angle, and Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry has got to be one of my favourite titles of all time. Every early review I have read has been four or five stars, and this is Joya Goffney’s debut novel, so I am excited to potentially find a new favourite YA author.

For the past two years, Lee has been laser-focused on two things: her job as a sound tech at a local coffee shop and her podcast “Artists in Love,” which she cohosts with her boyfriend Vincent.

Until he breaks up with her on the air right after graduation.

When their unexpected split, the loss of her job, and her parent’s announcement that they’re separating coincide, Lee’s plans, her art, and her life are thrown into turmoil. Searching for a new purpose, Lee recruits her old friend Max and new friend Risa to produce a podcast called “Objects of Destruction,” where they investigate whether love actually exists at all.

But the deeper they get into the love stories around them, the more Lee realizes that she’s the one who’s been holding love at arm’s length. And when she starts to fall for Risa, she finds she’ll have to be more honest with herself and the people in her life to create a new love story of her own.

Funny, romantic, and heartfelt, this is a story about secrets, lies, friendship, found family, an expired passport, a hidden VHS tape, fried pickles, the weird and wild city of Memphis, and, most of all, love.

The cover for Indestructible Object is beyond stunning, but it is the premise that really intrigues me. There seem to be more and more books coming out that include a podcast, and I love that. I bet this will be fantastic on audio!

When her twin sister reaches social media stardom, Moon Fuentez accepts her fate as the ugly, unwanted sister hidden in the background, destined to be nothing more than her sister’s camerawoman. But this summer, Moon also takes a job as the “merch girl” on a tour bus full of beautiful influencers and her fate begins to shift in the best way possible.

Most notable is her bunkmate and new nemesis, Santiago Phillips, who is grumpy, combative, and also the hottest guy Moon has ever seen.

Moon is certain she hates Santiago and that he hates her back. But as chance and destiny (and maybe, probably, close proximity) bring the two of them in each other’s perpetual paths, Moon starts to wonder if that’s really true. She even starts to question her destiny as the unnoticed, unloved wallflower she always thought she was.

Could this summer change Moon’s life as she knows it?

Social media, sibling relationships, hate-to-love romance, and a band tour? How Moon Fuentez Fell in Love With the Universe has so many elements that I adore in fiction. I have the audiobook for Sia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything, which is a novel by Gilliland that came out year. I need to get to that one soon!

Quinn Berkowitz and Tarek Mansour’s families have been in business together for years: Quinn’s parents are wedding planners, and Tarek’s own a catering company. At the end of last summer, Quinn confessed her crush on him in the form of a rambling email—and then he left for college without a response.

Quinn has been dreading seeing him again almost as much as she dreads another summer playing the harp for her parents’ weddings. When he shows up at the first wedding of the summer, looking cuter than ever after a year apart, they clash immediately. Tarek’s always loved the grand gestures in weddings—the flashier, the better—while Quinn can’t see them as anything but fake. Even as they can’t seem to have one civil conversation, Quinn’s thrown together with Tarek wedding after wedding, from performing a daring cake rescue to filling in for a missing bridesmaid and groomsman.

Quinn can’t deny her feelings for him are still there, especially after she learns the truth about his silence, opens up about her own fears, and begins learning the art of harp-making from an enigmatic teacher.

Maybe love isn’t the enemy after all—and maybe allowing herself to fall is the most honest thing Quinn’s ever done.

I have so many of Rachel Lynn Solomon’s books on my TBR, but I have yet to read any of them. That said, I have this feeling that I will adore all of her books. We Can’t Keep Meeting Like This sounds really sweet and a lot of the early reviews have mentioned how funny it is!

Seventeen-year-old Lily Hu can’t remember exactly when the question took root, but the answer was in full bloom the moment she and Kathleen Miller walked under the flashing neon sign of a lesbian bar called the Telegraph Club.

America in 1954 is not a safe place for two girls to fall in love, especially not in Chinatown. Red-Scare paranoia threatens everyone, including Chinese Americans like Lily. With deportation looming over her father—despite his hard-won citizenship—Lily and Kath risk everything to let their love see the light of day.

I haven’t read a lot of historical YA, especially from the perspective of a LGBTQ main character. Last Night at the Telegraph Club sounds like it is going to be a hard-hitting and beautiful read. I love the blurb from Emily X.R. Pan where she describes it as a “book for anyone who has ever loved- in any sense of the word.”

It seems as though there is a lot going on in Some Other Now, and it is being described as This Is Us for a YA audience. That tells me that there is going to be tears and I will need to have box of tissues on the ready.

I have read a lot of faking dating novels at this point, and I have loved most of them, but I don’t think I have every read a sapphic one. I am so excited about this, and look how adorable the cover is! I need to read The Henna Wars, which is also by Adiba Jaigirdar, because I have seen only incredible things about it.

I realize that this another book with fake dating, but in my mind there can never be too many books with this trope! Counting Down With You is a debut novel, which always makes me excited. I appreciated Bhuiyan’s comment on Goodreads where she speaks about how the anxiety in this book is based on her own experience.

If Bao Nguyen had to describe himself, he’d say he was a rock. Steady and strong, but not particularly interesting. His grades are average, his social status unremarkable. He works at his parents’ pho restaurant, and even there, he is his parents’ fifth favorite employee. Not ideal.

If Linh Mai had to describe herself, she’d say she was a firecracker. Stable when unlit, but full of potential for joy and fire. She loves art and dreams pursuing a career in it. The only problem? Her parents rely on her in ways they’re not willing to admit, including working practically full-time at her family’s pho restaurant.

For years, the Mais and the Nguyens have been at odds, having owned competing, neighboring pho restaurants. Bao and Linh, who’ve avoided each other for most of their lives, both suspect that the feud stems from feelings much deeper than friendly competition.

But then a chance encounter brings Linh and Bao in the same vicinity despite their best efforts and sparks fly, leading them both to wonder what took so long for them to connect. But then, of course, they immediately remember.

Can Linh and Bao find love in the midst of feuding families and complicated histories?

One of the cutest covers ever! I love that the main character is a writer and that she is using romance novels tropes to help inspire her and to find a love story of her own.

Are any of these are your radar? Is there a YA romance novel coming out next year that I missed and must read? Let me know!
