Books I Will No Longer Add to My TBR

This title is a little bit clickbaity because the reason I am no longer putting these books on my TBRs is probably not what you think! These are the books that I have put on a million TBRs and have never gotten to. They are my secret shame and I have decided I am no longer included them on official TBRs and will hopefully pick them up when the mood strikes without the added pressure! They are all books I think I will love or that have a lot of hype and I have been putting them off.

I have had the Fairyloot edition of One Dark Window since it came out and at this point the sequel is even out and I have yet to read book one! That has not stopped me from putting it on a million TBRs though. It was on my October TBR, my November TBR, and here we are in January and I haven’t read it. I think I have this idea that it is the perfect fall read but then fall comes and I just don’t prioritize it. I don’t know why I am depriving myself because it has so many tropes and themes that I love!

I tend to lump Spells for Forgetting and One Dark Window together in my mind for some strange reason! I think it is because they are both Fairyloot editions and they came out around the same time. I also have this idea in my mind that they will make for perfect fall reads. I think I just need to accept that I can’t read fifty books in October so I have no pick up some of these “fall” reads throughout the year. I also have so many books by Adrienne Young on my Goodreads TBR but I have never read anything by her!

Swordheart is probably the book on this list that I am most embarrassed about! I know you are probably sick of hearing this, but T. Kingfisher is my favourite author and I am quickly making my way through her backlist. While Swordheart is technically a standalone, it is part of a larger universe that Kingfisher has created. I have read the first two books in this universe and am now at the point where I have to read Swordheart. I know that this is so many people’s favourite book of hers and I am just not ready to have a new favourite T. Kingfisher! I cannot explain it!

Vita Nostra has been on so many TBRs at this point that I stopped adding it months ago because it is pathetic! I brought this book to a few people’s radars and even they have read it before I have and told me it is so weird and weird in the way that I enjoy. I think I have this idea that I will read this book in October by candlelight and have this perfect dark academia moment, but that is just silly. What is stopping me from reading it on the beach in July?

City of Dust gets mixed reviews but there is something about it that makes me think it will work for me! It is one of the first books I ever got from Fairyloot, so it is shameful that it is still sitting in my TBR cart. The sequel is out already! I have put it on too many TBRs this point and each time I truly thought I would read it, but here we are!

A Witch in Time was recommended to me by one of you many years ago and I bought it right away because it really does sound like the perfect book for me! I am not part of a witchy book club, so maybe I will force them to read it with me because that might me the only way it happens at this point. It is another victim of that “perfect book for fall” trap!

Silvia Moreno-Garcia is one of my favourite authors and I tend to read one book by her a year but that it typically her new release and I find myself neglecting her backlist. I have a feeling that will be the same this year as she is releasing The Seventh Veil of Salome, but I hope I can also make time for Gods of Jade and Shadow. I truly think it has the potential to be one of my favourites from her and I have owned it since 2019!

The Oleander Sword is the sequel to The Jasmine Throne, which was one of my favourite books the year that I read it! I was so sure that I would read the sequel the day it came out and told you all that would be the case but it came out in 2022 and it is still on my TBR. To be fair, I then thought the final book was coming out in 2023, so I was saving it for closer to that release day, but it is now coming out in November of this year. My hope is to reread The Jasmine Throne and then marathon the trilogy!

Much like with The Jasmine Throne, The Fifth Season was one of my best books the year that I read it. Why do I have a feeling that was in 2020? I think I had the rest of the series on TBRs every year since then. I know I have owned the entire series for years because I bought a boxed set.

I read and loved Jade City years ago but I wasn’t much of a series completer back then! Somehow that changed in 2023, so I am determined to finally reread the first book and finish the trilogy this year, which is something I have been promising to do every single year since I read Jade City.

This last one is not a book but an author! I have this feeling that Louise Erdrich will become one of my favourite authors and I am so convinced of this but I own three of her books. I have said this for years but for some reason I am depriving myself of finding out if my gut feeling is right. I think part of it is because I don’t read as much literary fiction as I used to but it is a genre I want to get back to!

  1. I relate to this topic so much! I have books I’ve been listing and claiming that they’re a priority in my next set of reading plans… and they’ve been on my lists for years without being read. Every once in a while, I’ll face the hard truth about a certain book — if I haven’t felt compelled to start it yet, chances are I never will! But for many others, I cling stubbornly to the idea that someday, eventually, it will happen.
