I share my most anticipated release every single month, but I am excited to narrow that down to a list of ten books coming out between August and December that I absolutely cannot wait to read! My list of July releases will be out this week.

From bestselling, National Book Award-winning author Elizabeth Acevedo comes her first novel for adults, the story of one Dominican-American family told through the voices of its women as they await a gathering that will forever change their lives.
Flor has a gift: she can predict, to the day, when someone will die. So when she decides she wants a living wake–a party to bring her family and community together to celebrate the long life she’s led–her sisters are surprised. Has Flor forseen her own death, or someone else’s? Does she have other motives? She refuses to tell her sisters, Matilde, Pastora, and Camila.
But Flor isn’t the only person with secrets. Matilde has tried for decades to cover the extent of her husband’s infidelity, but she must now confront the true state of her marriage. Pastora is typically the most reserved sister, but Flor’s wake motivates this driven woman to solve her sibling’s problems. Camila is the youngest sibling, and often the forgotten one, but she’s decided she no longer wants to be taken for granted.
And the next generation, cousins Ona and Yadi, face tumult of their own: Yadi is reuniting with her first love, who was imprisoned when they were both still kids; Ona is married for years and attempting to conceive. Ona must decide whether it’s worth it to keep trying–to have a child, and the anthropology research that’s begun to feel lackluster.
Spanning the three days prior to the wake, Family Lore traces the lives of each of the Marte women, weaving together past and present, Santo Domingo and New York City. Told with Elizabeth Acevedo’s inimitable and incandescent voice, this is an indelible portrait of sisters and cousins, aunts and nieces–one family’s journey through their history, helping them better navigate all that is to come.
I have adored everything I have read from Elizabeth Acevedo and I am so excited to read her adult debut. I have an eARC of Family Lore, so I plan to read it in July before it comes out on August 1st. It sounds so different from everything else she has written but it does sound like something I will love.

From the beloved New York Times bestselling author of The Marriage of Opposites and the Practical Magic series comes an enchanting novel about love, heartbreak, self-discovery, and the enduring magic of books.
One brilliant June day when Mia Jacob can no longer see a way to survive, the power of words saves her. The Scarlet Letter was written almost two hundred years earlier, but it seems to tell the story of Mia’s mother, Ivy, and their life inside the Community—an oppressive cult in western Massachusetts where contact with the outside world is forbidden, and books are considered evil. But how could this be? How could Nathaniel Hawthorne have so perfectly captured the pain and loss that Mia carries inside her?
Through a journey of heartbreak, love, and time, Mia must abandon the rules she was raised with at the Community. As she does, she realizes that reading can transport you to other worlds or bring them to you, and that readers and writers affect one another in mysterious ways. She learns that time is more fluid than she can imagine, and that love is stronger than any chains that bind you.
As a girl Mia fell in love with a book. Now as a young woman she falls in love with a brilliant writer as she makes her way back in time. But what if Nathaniel Hawthorne never wrote The Scarlet Letter ? And what if Mia Jacob never found it on the day she planned to die?
Nathaniel Hawthorne “A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities.”
This is the story of one woman’s dream. For a little while it came true.
Alice Hoffman is one of my favourite authors and I was lucky enough to be sent an ARC of The Invisible Hour, which comes out on August 15th. I love the way that Hoffman weaves magic into her stories and I am curious to see what she does with a cult.

Vampires and vaqueros face off on the Texas-Mexico border in this supernatural western from the author of The Hacienda.
As the daughter of a rancher in 1840s Mexico, Nena knows a thing or two about monsters—her home has long been threatened by tensions with Anglo settlers from the north. But something more sinister lurks near the ranch at night, something that drains men of their blood and leaves them for dead.
Something that once attacked Nena nine years ago.
Believing Nena dead, Néstor has been on the run from his grief ever since, moving from ranch to ranch working as a vaquero. But no amount of drink can dispel the night terrors of sharp teeth; no woman can erase his childhood sweetheart from his mind.
When the United States attacks Mexico in 1846, the two are brought abruptly together on the road to war: Nena as a curandera, a healer striving to prove her worth to her father so that he does not marry her off to a stranger, and Néstor as a member of the auxiliary cavalry of ranchers and vaqueros. But the shock of their reunion—and Nena’s rage at Néstor for seemingly abandoning her long ago—is quickly overshadowed by the appearance of a nightmare made flesh.
And unless Nena and Néstor work through their past and face the future together, neither will survive to see the dawn.
You know I will never say no to a vampire novel, especially if it is historical. I have been meaning to read Isabel Canas’ debut novel, The Hacienda, since it came out but I have a feeling I will get to Vampires of El Norte first when it comes out on August 15th because vampires.

There’s a princess trapped in a tower. This isn’t her story.
Meet Toadling. On the day of her birth, she was stolen from her family by the fairies, but she grew up safe and loved in the warm waters of faerieland. Once an adult though, the fae ask a favor of return to the human world and offer a blessing of protection to a newborn child. Simple, right?
But nothing with fairies is ever simple.
Centuries later, a knight approaches a towering wall of brambles, where the thorns are as thick as your arm and as sharp as swords. He’s heard there’s a curse here that needs breaking, but it’s a curse Toadling will do anything to uphold…
I am noticing that August 15th is going to be a HUGE release day for me, but I will obviously read Thornhedge first because it is T. Kingfisher. I love everything she writes but I have a special place in my heart for her fairytale retellings.

In a trendy Salt Lake City, Utah, neighborhood, Ben Rosencrantz’s board game shop has become a community hotspot for players of all ages—and for killer collectors.
Back in his hometown of Sugar House running his family’s board game shop and cafe, Ben Rosencrantz just can’t seem to get his life to pass go, much less collect $200. Once he was a happily married English professor in Seattle. Now he’s a divorced caregiver, looking after his ill father and a chihuahua named Beans while still figuring out the rules of retail management. At least the town has become more LGBTQ+ friendly than when Ben was a teenager—and that flower shop owner Ezra McCaslin enjoys flirting with him.
But despite his usual clientele of gamers, Ben is barely earning enough to keep the store running and stay on top of his father’s medical bills. Then a local toy and game collector named Clive offers him a winning strategy—to purchase a turn-of-the-twentieth-century edition of The Landlord’s Game, the realty and taxation game that inspired Monopoly, at a tenth of the rare edition’s true value. Suspicious of Clive’s shady, low-priced deal, Ben turns the offer down.
Then Clive turns up dead in the dumpster behind Ben’s shop and a backpack full of $100 bills appears on his doorstep. Now Ben is the #1 suspect in Clive’s death, and unless he and Ezra can prove his innocence and find the real killer, he’ll go to jail for murder—and no amount of double dice rolls will set him free . . .
Board to Death probably seems like the most random book on this list, but it just looks like so much fun! I mean, it is a queer, cozy mystery set at a board game cafe! It comes out on August 22nd.

Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. She’s had no choice. Since childhood, she’s been haunted by visions of the Fairy King. She’s found solace only in the pages of Angharad – author Emrys Myrddin’s beloved epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King, and then destroys him.
Effy’s tattered, dog-eared copy is all that’s keeping her afloat through her stifling first term at Llyr’s prestigious architecture college. So when Myrddin’s family announces a contest to design the late author’s house, Effy feels certain this is her destiny.
But Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task: a musty, decrepit estate on the brink of crumbling into a hungry sea. And when Effy arrives, she finds she isn’t the only one who’s made a temporary home there. Preston Héloury, a stodgy young literature scholar, is studying Myrddin’s papers and is determined to prove her favorite author is a fraud.
As the two rival students investigate the reclusive author’s legacy, piecing together clues through his letters, books, and diaries, they discover that the house’s foundation isn’t the only thing that can’t be trusted. There are dark forces, both mortal and magical, conspiring against them – and the truth may bring them both to ruin.
Ava Reid is an author I have never read from before but have a feeling I will love. Everything about the cover of A Study in Drowning tells me that it is a book for me. It comes out on September 19th and I have a feeling there are going to be some gorgeous special editons of it!

Following the bestselling The Kaiju Preservation Society, John Scalzi returns with Starter Villain, another unique sci-fi caper set in the strangest of all worlds, present-day Earth.
Inheriting your mysterious uncle’s supervillain business is more complicated than you might imagine.
Sure, there are the things you’d expect. The undersea volcano lairs. The minions. The plots to take over the world. The international networks of rivals who want you dead.
Much harder to get used to…are the the sentient, language-using, computer-savvy cats.
And the fact that in the overall organization, they’re management…
Starter Villain wins for the greatest cover of 2023! I don’t even care what this is about, I am going to read it. It is a cat in a suit! Best believe this book will find its way on my shelves on September 19th.

Am I making it worse? I think I’m making it worse.
Everyone’s favorite lethal SecUnit is back.
Following the events in Network Effect, the Barish-Estranza corporation has sent rescue ships to a newly-colonized planet in peril, as well as additional SecUnits. But if there’s an ethical corporation out there, Murderbot has yet to find it, and if Barish-Estranza can’t have the planet, they’re sure as hell not leaving without something. If that something just happens to be an entire colony of humans, well, a free workforce is a decent runner-up prize.
But there’s something wrong with Murderbot; it isn’t running within normal operational parameters. ART’s crew and the humans from Preservation are doing everything they can to protect the colonists, but with Barish-Estranza’s SecUnit-heavy persuasion teams, they’re going to have to hope Murderbot figures out what’s wrong with itself, and fast!
Yeah, this plan is… not going to work.
We are getting another full length Murderbot novel! I am so happy that I caught up on this series this year and will be ready for System Collapse when it comes out on November 14th.

She’s got a ramshackle spaceship, a misfit crew, and a big problem with its sexy newest member…
Temperance Reed, banished from the wealthy and dangerous Fifteen Families, just wants to keep her crew together after their feckless captain ran off with the intern. But she’s drowning in debt and revolutionary new engine technology is about to make her beloved ship obsolete.
Enter Arcadio Escajeda. Second child of the terrifying Escajeda Family, he’s the thorn in Temper’s side as they’re sent off on a scouting mission on the backwater desert planet of Herschel 2. They throw sparks every time they meet but Temper’s suspicions of his ulterior motives only serve to fuel the flames between them.
Despite volcanic eruptions, secret cultists, and deadly galactic fighters, the greatest threat on this mission may be to Temper’s heart.
Calamity is the first book that is going to be published by Tor’s new romance imprint, Bramble. I love that they went for a SciFi romance because they are so much harder to find! November 14th is obviously a big release day for SciFi fans.

When the gods make the rules, the players must choose: Sacrifice their love to save the world, or choose love and let it burn?
Six months after saving their island from destruction and almost losing Dante, Alessa is ready to live happily ever after with her former bodyguard. But Dante can’t rest, haunted by a conviction that the gods aren’t finished with them yet. And without his powers, the next kiss from Alessa could kill him.
Desperate for answers, Dante enlists Alessa and their friends to find the exiled ghiotte in hopes of restoring his powers and combining forces with them to create the only army powerful enough to save them all. But Alessa is hiding a deadly consequence of their last fight–a growing darkness that’s consuming her mind–and their destination holds more dangers than anyone bargained for. In the mysterious city of the banished, Dante will uncover secrets, lies, and ghosts from his past that force him to ask himself: Which side is he on?
When the gods reveal their final test, Dante and Alessa will be the world’s last defense. But if they are the keys to saving the world, will their love be the price of victory?
In This Cursed Light, Dante and Alessa face their most daunting challenge yet when the Gods demand they prove their worth by choosing the ultimate sacrifice to save humanity, once and for all.
This Vicious Grace was one of the best books I read in 2022 and I have been impatiently waiting for the sequel ever since. The release for This Cursed Light was pushed back to December 5th, but I am willing to wait if Emily Thiede felt she needed more time. I am just excited to be back with Dante and Alessa!

I have some of the same books on my list as you do, but you also found some that I didn’t know about! And I keep forgetting that Elizabeth Acevedo has an adult book coming out. Thanks for the reminder!
Starter Villain really does have an excellent cover. I’m super glad I preordered it in hardback so that it can live on my physical shelves.
My TTT is a REALLY long list today… https://bookwyrmknits.com/2023/06/27/top-ten-tuesday-most-anticipated-books-of-2023-part-2/
Yes! I feel like Family Lore has been getting as much buzz.
The cover for Starter Villain is just too good!
Family Lore sounds really good.
Here is my Top Ten Tuesday post.
Doesn’t it!?
Fab list! A Study in Drowning is another I want to read!

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
Right? I am always up for a unique cozy mystery!
That Starter Villain cover is killing me! Now, I need to read it, too! I hope you love all of these!
Isn’t it hilarious?! I need to read it!!
Starter Villain is on my list. I’m going to see Scalzi again in July at Con-Gregate in Winston-Salem, NC. Having him sign a copy of The Kaiju Preservation Society. For some reason I thought A Study in Drowning was out. ARCS were out for this really early, I got turned down. Boo.
How fun! I love author events!
Booooo! I will have to see if it is still available to request on Netgalley.
I have no idea if it is. Inge thing I have discovered is if you publicly supported the employees during the HarCo strike, you might be blacklisted.
This Cursed Light is at the top of my list. So excited to see where the story goes.
Me too! I might have to reread book one beforehand!
I just finished Thornhedge, and loved it! I’m looking forward to the Alice Hoffman book too. Hope you enjoy all of these!
Love hearing that! T. Kingfisher never misses!
FAMILY LORE has been everywhere today. It does sound good! I hope you enjoy it and all your other picks.
Happy TTT!

I know! I have loved seeing it everywhere because it hasn’t been getting a lot of marketing yet.
I’m very much looking forward to Family Lore, Board to Death, and This Cursed Light (which I’m getting signed and personalized from my fave indie because the author is local–WOO!) So many good picks here!
Ahh I am so envious that Emily Thiede is local to you. I’d love to meet her!
Just added The Vampires of El Norte to my TBR I loved her first book
I still need to read her debut!
It’s one of my favorite reads form last year
I recently got Board to Death from NetGalley. I’ve never read a board game-themed cozy mystery before. Looking forward to Vampires of El Norte too.
My TTT post is HERE. Have a great week! — Diana
