HarperCollins Canada was kind enough to send me a copy of The Exiles, and I am really enjoying to so far. I have not read many books set in Australia, so that has been fascinating for me. I know very little about Australia’s history, especially in the 1800s. The novel follows the lives of three women, and I am curious to see how their stories come together. It is evident that Kline has done a lot of research, which I am very much appreciating.

Even though Sarah Perry has published only three books, she is one of my favourite authors. The Essex Serpent and Melmoth are two of the best Gothic novels I have ever read. The end of August is usually when I start to get excited about the Fall, so it does not surprise me that I would be drawn to a Gothic horror novel this time of year. I can perfectly remember how this book made me feel and the ending is still one of the best endings of all time, in my opinion.

Both The Exiles and Melmoth are historical fiction novels, but they have very different tones. Melmoth is much darker and more atmospheric, while The Exiles is more informative and compelling. The Exiles is a book that I would feel comfortable recommending to almost anyone, while I would have to have a greater understanding of your reading taste before recommending Melmoth.

What were you reading this time last year?
