I have always enjoyed reading book quotes, so I decided that for 2019 I will share my favourite quotes for every five books that I read! These are quotes that stood out to me, but will in no way spoil the book for you. I hope they give you a sense of what the book is about and the writing style!
Lanny by Max Porter
“Which do you think is more patient, an idea or a hope?”
“And she laughed, and said she understood, and then off she drifted in that nice way she has. Responsive to the light, I would call it. The type of person who is that little bit more akin to the weather than most people, more obviously made of the same atoms as the earth than most people these days seem to be. Which explains Lanny.”
‘’You cannot fix the way the world is broken all on your own.’’
Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman
“Of course it was Loki. It’s always Loki.”
“The Norse myths are the myths of a chilly place, with long, long winter nights and endless summer days, myths of a people who did not entirely trust or even like their gods, although they respected and feared them.”
“That was the thing about Loki. You resented him even when you were at your most grateful, and you were grateful to him even when you hated him the most.”
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman
“It contained Nina’s favorite saying: You talk when you cease to be at peace with your thoughts.”
“Do you know the best feeling in the world?” “Uh…” Nina shook her head, despite having some ideas. Liz glowed. “It’s reading a book, loving every second of it, then turning to the front and discovering that the writer wrote fourteen zillion others.”
“If you’re not scared, you’re not brave.”
Exit West by Mohsin Hamid
“In this group, everyone was foreign, and so, in a sense, no one was.”
“but that is the way of things, for when we migrate, we murder from our lives those we leave behind.”
“She had the bizarre feeling of time bending all around her, as though she was from the past reading about the future, or from the future reading about the past.”
On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan
“This is how the entire course of a life can be changed: by doing nothing.”
“But it was too interesting, too new, too flattering, too deeply comforting to resist, it was a liberation to be in love and say so, and she could only let herself go deeper.”
“He was discovering that being in love was not a steady state, but a matter of fresh surges or waves, and he was experiencing one now.”
Have you read any of these books? I would love to know if any of the quotes resonated with you!
I love this post idea. I can’t wait to finally read Norse Mythology — I’ve had it for forever now yet haven’t managed to pick it up and read it.
Norse Mythology is so fun! It’s also a pretty quick read. Hope you love it as much as I did!
Ooo … I like the sound of a fun AND quick read. I’ve been needing more quick reads as i have WAY too many books I want to finish this year ha-ha! And I’m sure I will. Gaiman has a way of making me really love his literature 😀
I’ve read Norse Mythology and Exit West, and loved both! You chose some great quotes from each.
Thanks! Excellent books with so many quotes to choose from!
I have read ‘Exit West’ and loved it! The quote from ‘the Bookish Life of Nina Hill’ sounds so good 💜✨. Need to check out that book asap!
You’ve been reading some excellent books recently! 😊 I really enjoyed both Lanny and On Chesil Beach.
I really have. Both such fantastic books. So thrilled Lanny was longlisted for the Booker Prize!
Same here!
14 zillion other books written by a new fave author would definitely make me happy!!
Right?! I wish!
I love these kind of posts because it’s amazing how much these beautiful quotes stick with you
Agreed! Quotes can tell you a lot about a book and about the reader!
I love that first quote from Lanny! It’s such an amazing book. One of my favs this year 🙂
Same! Such a great and surprising book!
I can’t believe I still haven’t read Norse Mythology yet! I’m a terrible Gaiman fan! And those Loki quotes are spot on. 😀
There are so many great Loki quotes and stories. It was such a fun read. I hope Gaiman writes more books like it!
Quotes lead me to buying a book better than any other means. It’s a great way to show an author’s writing style 🙂
I completely agree. Tells you a lot about a book!
I have Norse Mythology on my TBR – your quotes have made me want to read it even more! Great post!
It is such a fun book! So many Loki shenanigans!
Love this idea!
Thanks! I loving writing these posts!
I love Loki! The book looked a little intimidating but Loki makes everything better.
Loki makes the book so fun and entertaining!
So glad you loved Exit West. I know it has mixed reviews but I thought it was great!
