Reindeer Readathon Announcement + TBR

I am co-hosting the Reindeer Readathon for the third year in a row and I am so excited about it because it never fails to get me into the Christmas spirit. I am once again captaining Team Stocking but in this readathon you are assigned your team, so there is no guarantee you will end up with me if you decide to join but my co-hosts are incredible and I am alway up for a little friendly competition.

This readathon is created by Erik from the YouTube channel, Breakevenbooks, and it runs like pretty much every other readathon. It starts on December 1st and ends on December 31st and there are prompts you have to complete and some bonuses challenges as well. Check out Erik’s announcement video for all of the details!

DASHER – 10 PTS
Read a book that is recommended to you on social media or is a list
recommendation (Youtube, Goodreads, Google etc).

I am trying to read as many holiday-related books in December but there are a few exceptions! I think I would get burnt out on them otherwise. I have a Discord with bookish friends and they are always recommending me stuff and I am easily influenced by them but Sorcery and Small Magics has been a favourite recently and I have not seen it get a lot of attention anywhere else so I thought it was the perfect book for this prompt!

DANCER – 15 PTS
Read a book genre that you feel matches your favorite music genre
(i.e. Pop-Fantasy, Rock/Metal-Thriller/Horror, R&B-Romance, etc.)

I love many genres of music but I am a pop girlie at heart! I was one of those kids who was OBSESSED with The Spice Girls and my friends and I would pretend to be them and they were more first concert. I have always had a soft spot for girl groups and I think contemporary romance fits the pop vibes but making it a sapphic romance is even better! I haven’t read anything from Ashley Herring Blake, though I have heard amazing things. Make the Season Bright was one of the ALCs from Libro.fm this month, so I am excited to have an excuse to listen to it. I think this has been getting mixed reviews but I am going into it with an open mind!

PRANCER – 10 PTS
Read a book where the synopsis mentions a named special
event/date.

This was an easy one because I would considering Christmas a special event, wouldn’t you? The back of The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year also mentions a Christmas party if we want to get a little more specific with it. Let’s be honest now, I bought this because the cover is clearly a reference to Chris Evans in Knives Out and I remember coming out of the theatre obsessed with his sweater. This was just great marketing because they got me! It also doesn’t hurt that it has been getting great reviews and I am wanting to try more mystery romances.

VIXEN – 15 PTS
Read a book you didn’t buy (Kindle Unlimited, Library, Borrowed, Gift
etc).

I read The Pumpkin Spice Cafe because I was given the audiobook and I wanted to see what all the hype was about! While it was cute, I thought that it read like Gilmore Girls fanfiction to the point that it was a little distracting and I didn’t think I would continue on with the series. But then The Christmas Tree Farm was gifted to me and it was also voted the group read for the readathon, so I figured why not? I know this is the third book in the series, but if I end up liking this one maybe I will go back and read the second one.

COMET – 15 PTS
Read a book that ends on the last digit of the day of your birth (i.e.
28th would have to end in 8).

My birthday is June 1st and I discovered while putting this TBR together that not a lot of books end in “1”, which makes sense because you may as well round down because it is more satisfying. However, this made it difficult to find a book for this prompt but I was thrilled when I discovered Dead of Winter was 341 pages. I am a fan of isolated thrillers, especially with a winter setting, and I wanted to read more from Darcy Coates in 2024 but I somehow neglected her this year!

DONNER – 20 PTS
Read a book where the cover contains one of the first 4 words you
see in the word search grid on page 4. Must be a word from the list.

You can find the word search by clicking this link and I don’t want to spoil it for you so all I will say is that one of the words I found was “serpent”, which was pretty easy as someone who loves fantasy. There are no shortage of fantasy books with snakes on the cover but I went for Legend of the White Snake because I was kindly sent an ARC. It has great reviews but I have not seen many people talking about it so I am hoping to find an underrated gem.

CUPID – 10 PTS
Read a book from an author that you have already given 5 stars.

I think I have given five stars to every single one of C.J. Cooke’s books, so I had to use The Book of Witching for this prompt. She seems to release a new book every October and I usually read them on release day, so it is shocking that I haven’t read this one yet. I need to read it in December because there is a good chance it will end up on my best books of the year list, like she does every single year.

BLITZEN – 15 PTS
Choose 3 books that start with the same letter. Randomly choose
one of them to read (Random number generator, have someone
choose etc.)

I let a random generator choose my letter and it gave me “L”. The three books I chose where The Last Phi Hunter, The Lady or the Lion, and The Lotus Empire. The random generator then gave me The Lotus Empire, which is great because I am determined to finished that series before the end of the year. I just need to read The Oleander Sword first…

RUDOLPH – 15 PTS
Read a debut novel.

I wanted to add another Christmas romance to my TBR but was worried that it would be hard to find a debut but I’ll Be Gone for Christmas came out this year and is actually the author’s debut, so it is too perfect.
