Found Family Book Recommendations

The “found family” trope will always be one of my favourites, so I thought it would be fun to share some recommendations of books that feature this beloved trope. According to the New York Public Library “found family” refers to a device in literature and media where a group of characters find themselves united in a family-bond based on shared experiences, mutual understanding, and interpersonal connection.

There was a time where all I did was gush about Raybearer on this blog but I haven’t been doing that as much lately and I am ashamed of myself! It is not only my favourite YA fantasy, I think it is one of my top five favourite books. A lot of that comes down to the found family that was so endearing and has stayed with me all of these year later. These characters are literally connected through something called Rays, so they have something deeper than your typical friendship. Also, Jordan Infueko is announcing her next book in February!

You are probably tired of me talking about the Wayfarer series, but, to me, it is pique found family and no list like this would be complete without it. Each of the books in the series can technically be read as standalones because they follow different casts of characters but they all heavily rely on the found family trope and I was here for it. I think this is what Becky Chambers does best because you can also find this trope in her novellas- The Monk and the Robot series and To Be Taught. If Fortunate.

If you have read The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, you know why I included it on this list! It is definitely a romance but the found family between our main character and these younger witches and their caretakers is just the sweetest thing.
