My Favourite Indie/Self-Published Books

I have been sick for the last week and I wasn’t able to get my TTT up on time, but I loved this week’s topic so I didn’t want to skip it. I have been embracing indie/self-published books lately, so hopefully, I will have a part two up for you soon.

The Mead Mishaps series has quickly become one of my favourite things! This is the kind of quirky and ridiculous fantasy romance that works for me. The third book, That Time I Drugged a Dragon, comes out on April 13th and the author just announced that there will be at least two more books in the series! These books are sweet and steamy and silly and I loved them!

Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater is traditionally published but she also wrote Small Miracles, which is self published! This is one of the finalists for this year’s SPFBO and it is one of the standouts for me. I think this is the perfect book for fans of Good Omens and those who like lighter fantasy. It made me realize how much I love that angel/demon trope!

Miss Percy’s Pocket Guide to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons is another SPFBO finalist and is my personal favourite! This is for a very specific audience and that audience is me. I bought the sequel, Miss Percy’s Travel Guide to Welsh Moors and Feral Dragons, the moment I finished book one. I love the simplicity of it!

Scales and Sensibility is the last SPFBO book on this list! This was Jane Austen with dragons and was everything I hoped it would be. It is silly and fun and don’t let the Sense and Sensibility reference fool you- this is not a direct retelling and is more of its own things that just has those Jane Austen vibes. I cannot wait for the sequel!

Kennedy Ryan is quickly becoming one of my new favourite authors and she has both traditional and indie books! Reel is one of her indies and is probably the best romance I have read so far this year. There are so many layers to this story and I found myself in tears throughout! It was so beautiful!

Mira Grant has a few horror novellas that she publishes with Subterranean Press. I have read two so far and hope to eventually read them all! Final Girls the one that I started with and it is the book that made me realize how much I enjoy SciFi horror. This read like a Black Mirror episode and I thought it was so interesting! The other one is Rolling in the Deep, which I just read, and is a prequel to Into the Drowning Deep. It was also fantastic!

T. Kingfisher is another author who has both indie and tranditionally published books, and I love them all. A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking is my favourite of hers and it is indie published. Some others that stand out to me are Minor Mage, Byony and Rose, and The Raven and the Reindeer!

If you are looking for a cozy mystery series that has a hint of fantasy, I highly recommend Baking Bad! It reads like a true cozy mystery but with dragons and it is such a delight. I desperately need to continue on with the series!

The Subtweet was published by  ECW Press, an indie publisher here in Canada. This is one of the best books about social media that I have ever read and it deserves more attention!

I am definitely not a poetry reader, but Aphrodite Made Me Do It is the exception. This is my go-to recommendation when anyone asks me about poetry.
