My Most Anticipated Sequels of 2023

Get ready for an onslaught of “2023 book releases” posts! We are starting with the sequels coming out in 2023 that I cannot wait to get my hands on!

War Widow is the sequel to Blood Scion, a book that blew me away and left a lasting impression on me. Blood Scion is one of the most brutal books I have ever read, especially considering it is YA, and I expect War Widow will be more of the same. We don’t have a synopsis from the publisher yet!

Book three in the Burning Kingdom series is supposed to come out in 2023, but we don’t have a title, cover, or synopsis quite yet! The Jasmine Throne is one of my favourite books and I have plans to read The Oleander Sword this month.

Against all odds, sexy American rapper, Danielle “Duchess” Nelson and brilliant reclusive royal Prince Jameson have fallen in love! They’ve decided to take their relationship public and find a way to make their two worlds coexist. On their terms.

Unfortunately, falling in love was the easy part.

Jameson and Dani’s love story has made them the most popular royals since Prince John, but that popularity comes with a price. Dani looks forward to signing the deal with a major cosmetics company that will make her skin care line, Mela-Skin, a force in the industry, and finally grant her the control over her life she’s craved since childhood. But the company wants to take advantage of their fame and involve Jameson in Mela-Skin’s marketing campaign. Dani is outraged! Her company has nothing to do with Jameson.

After stepping up for the royal family, Jameson yearns to retreat back into academia. But he’s fired when his university raises concerns about his newfound notoriety. And suddenly the queen, initially against the relationship, backtracks, seeing their cooperation when the family is embroiled in yet another scandal. This isn’t the quiet life Jameson was hoping for.

Dani and Jameson truly love each other. But under the scrutiny of the international spotlight, when the doubts, compromises, and secrets begin to take their toll, will their love be enough?

American Royalty was my favourite romance ever, but I did really like Dani as a character, so I am excited at the idea of reading more from her in The Duchess Effect. The fact that she is on the cover alone gives me hope that we will get a lot of her perspective. I also appreciate that we are getting the story after the happily ever after.

For her entire life, Rose Maxwell trained to become the next Prima on the Supernatural Council. Now that she’s stepped down, it’s time for this witch to focus on herself. And not think about her impulsive one-night stand with Damian Adams, a half-Demon Veterinarian who she can’t get out of her head. Neither of them is looking for a relationship. But when Rose is sentenced to community service at Damian’s animal sanctuary it becomes impossible for them to ignore their sparking attraction. A friends-with-benefits, no feelings, no strings arrangement works perfectly for them both.

After a sequence of dead-end jobs, it’s not until Rose tangos with two snarly demons that she thinks she’s finally found her path. However, this puts Damian back on the periphery of a world he thought he left behind. He doesn’t approve of Rose becoming a Hunter, but if there’s one thing he’s learned about the stubborn witch, it was telling her not to do something was one sure-fire way to make sure she did.

Working—and sleeping—together awakens feelings Damian never knew he had…and shouldn’t have. Because thanks to his ex’s hex, if he falls in love, he’ll not only lose his heart—but his humanity.

I had so much fun with the first book in this series, Not the Witch You Wed, and I am excited to learn more about this world in Not Your Ex’s Hexes. I have an eARC of this and plan to read it in January!

A modern tale of unexpectedly falling in love, and finding your voice—the highly anticipated third installment of in the acclaimed and best-selling Meant to Be collection.

Ariel del Mar is one of the most famous singers in the world. She and her sisters—together, known as the band Siren Seven—have been a pop culture phenomenon since they were kids. On stage, wearing her iconic red wig and sequined costumes, staring out at a sea of fans, is where she shines. Anyone would think she’s the girl who has everything.

But lately, she wants more. Siren Seven is wrapping up their farewell tour, and Ariel can’t wait to spend the summer just living a normal life—part of a world she’s only ever seen from the outside. But her father, the head of Atlantica Records, has other plans: begin her breakout solo career immediately, starting with a splashy announcement on a morning talk show.

The night before, Ariel and her sisters sneak out of their Manhattan penthouse for a night of incognito fun at a rock concert in Brooklyn. It’s there that Ariel crosses paths with Eric Reyes, dreamy lead singer of an up-and-coming band. Unaware of her true identity, Eric spontaneously invites her on the road for the summer. And for the first time in her life, Ariel disobeys her father—and goes with him.

Caught between the world she longs for and the one she’s left behind, can Ariel follow her dreams, fall in love, and, somehow, find her own voice?

Kiss the Girl is the third book in the Meant to Be series and is obviously inspired by The Little Mermaid. I adore Zoraida Cordova and I was thrilled to see that she was writing the next installment!

Petunia De Vere enjoys being the personal assistant to lovable, bumbling Johnny Marchmont. But the job has its share of challenges, including the royal’s giant, intimidating bodyguard, Matthias. Pet and Matthias are polar opposites—she’s spontaneous and enthusiastic, he’s rigid and stoic—but she can sense there’s something softer underneath that tough exterior…

For Matthias Vaughn, protecting others is the name of the game. But keeping his royal charge out of trouble is more difficult than he imagined because everywhere Johnny goes, calamity ensues, and his petite, bubbly assistant is often caught in the fray. Matthias hates the idea of Pet getting hurt and he’s determined to keep everyone safe, even if it means clashing with his adorable new coworker.

When a clumsy moment leads to a questionable tabloid photo, the press begins to speculate that Pet is romantically involved with Johnny. To put an end to the rumors, the royal PR team asks Pet and Matthias to stage a fake relationship and the two reluctantly agree. But as they spend more time together outside of work, they begin to wonder what real emotions this pretend connection might uncover. Especially when a passionate kiss leaves both of their heads spinning…

Codename Charming is a companion novel to Battle Royal, which I read last year and thought was adorable. I love these characters in the first book

Non-stop action, space battles and intrigue abound in the second in a galactic-scale, gender-swapped space opera trilogy inspired by the life of Alexander The Great.

The Republic of Chaonia fleets under the joint command of Princess Sun and her formidable mother, Queen-Marshal Eirene, have defeated and driven out an invading fleet of the Phene Empire, although not without heavy losses. But the Empire remains strong and undeterred. While Chaonia scrambles to rebuild its military, the Empire’s rulers are determined to squash Chaonia once and for all by any means necessary.

On the eve of Eirene’s bold attack on the rich and populous Karnos System, an unexpected tragedy strikes the republic. Sun must take charge or lose the throne. Will Sun be content with the pragmatic path laid out by her mother for Chaonia’s future? Or will she forge her own legend despite all the forces arrayed against her?

We read the first book, Unconquerable Sun, for the Book Check Out Book Club and I was surprised by how much I loved it! I actually have an eARC of Furious Heaven, but I am nervous because this book is over 700 pages.

Four years after her tumultuous senior year, Jade Daniels is released from prison right before Christmas when her conviction is overturned. But life beyond bars takes a dangerous turn as soon as she returns to Proofrock. Convicted Serial Killer, Dark Mill South, seeking revenge for thirty-eight Dakota men hanged in 1862, escapes from his prison transfer due to a blizzard, just outside of Proofrock, Idaho.

Dark Mill South’s Reunion Tour began on December 12th, 2019, a Thursday.

Thirty-six hours and twenty bodies later, on Friday the 13th, it would be over.

Don’t Fear the Reaper is the follow-up to My Heart is a Chainsaw, which is a book I have yet to read but have owned since release day. I am hoping that knowing the sequel is coming out will push me to read the first book, especially because I really do enjoy Stephen Graham Jones.

Aspiring artist Fanny Price is an unwelcome guest at her uncle Sir Thomas Bertram’s estate. It’s his affection for Fanny that’s keeping her from being forced out by her cousins Tom and Maria and nasty Aunt Norris, back to a home to which she never wants to return. But then Sir Thomas dies in a tragic accident inside his art emporium and Fanny finds evidence of foul play that, if revealed, could further jeopardize her already precarious position. Edmund, her best friend and secret crush, urges Fanny to keep quiet about her discovery, but Fanny can’t ignore the truth: a murderer is among them.

Determined to uncover the truth, Fanny’s pursuit for justice has her wading into the Bertram family business, uncovering blackmail, and brushing with London’s high society when Henry and Mary Crawford arrive at Mansfield Park with an audacious business proposal. But a surprising twist of fate—and the help of local legends Lizzie Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy—brings Fanny more complications than she ever expected and a life-altering realization she never saw coming.

Manslaughter Park is the third book in the Jane Austen Murder Mystery series. I have been loving this series and I cannot wait to see what Tirzah Price does with Mansfield Park!

In 2023, we are getting three of these YA classic remix novels that I have been enjoying! My Dear Henry is a Jekyll and Hyde remix, Teach the Torches to Burn is a Romeo and Juliet remix, and Into the Bright Open is a Secret Garden remix, but we don’t have a cover for it yet. We are also getting a Pride and Prejudice one in 2024!

When the gods make the rules, the players must choose: Sacrifice their love to save the world, or choose love and let it burn?

Six months after saving their island from destruction and almost losing Dante, Alessa is ready to live happily ever after with her former bodyguard. But Dante can’t rest, haunted by a conviction that the gods aren’t finished with them yet. And without his powers, the next kiss from Alessa could kill him.

In This Cursed LightDesperate for answers, Dante enlists Alessa and their friends to find the exiled ghiotte in hopes of restoring his powers and combining forces with them to create the only army powerful enough to save them all. But Alessa is hiding a deadly consequence of their last fight—a growing darkness that’s consuming her mind—and their destination holds more dangers than anyone bargained for. In the mysterious city of the banished, Dante will uncover secrets, lies, and ghosts from his past that force him to ask himself: Which side is he on?

When the gods reveal their final test, Dante and Alessa will be the world’s last defense. But if they are the keys to saving the world, will their love be the price of victory?

In This Cursed Light, Dante and Alessa face their most daunting challenge yet when the Gods demand they prove their worth by choosing the ultimate sacrifice to save humanity, once and for all.

This Vicious Grace caught me completely off guard and became one of my favourite books of the year! I cannot tell you how excited I am for This Cursed Light!

Twin queens Wren and Rose have claimed their crowns . . . but not everyone is happy about witches sitting on Eana’s throne.

Cool-headed Rose sets off on a Royal Tour to win over the doubters, but soon finds herself drawn to the Sunless Kingdom. Here secrets are revealed about those closest to her, and Rose finds her loyalties divided.

Meanwhile rebellious Wren steals away to the icy north to rescue their beloved grandmother, Banba. But when she accepts King Alarik’s deadly magical bargain in exchange for Banba’s freedom, the spell has unexpected – and far-reaching – consequences . . .

As an ancient curse begins to arise from the darkness, the sisters must come together and unite the crown. Their lives – and the future of Eana – depend on it.

Break the ice to free the curse,
Kill one twin to save another . . .

Twins Crowns was a fun read and left me curious enough to want to check out the sequel, Cursed Crowns.

  1. Wow! I’ve heard of none of these series before, but I am very interested in some of them, and I’m excited to start reading them 😃 thank you for sharing your reviews!

  2. Thank you so much for this list and putting so many books on my radar!! I personally can’t wait for The Duchess Effect! 💙 and that cover is everything!!

  3. Why do younger readers and writers seem obsessed with fantasy, space wars, magic kingdoms, et al in novels often crammed with gratuitous brutality? Raised reading novels created in the 19th and 20th centuries, most of which focused on the courage, intelligence, and perseverance of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, I’ve found it very difficult to engage impossible or at least highly implausible protagonists and settings. Sorry, not judging; just trying to understand.

  4. All of these covers are great! Definitely looking forward to Codename Charming because I enjoyed Battle Royal!

  5. I am so excited to read Manslaughter Park. Found this series this summer and just loved the two first books. Can´t wait to see how the familiar characters will act in this one 🙂

  6. The Burning Kingdom series is something I’ve been meaning to pick up so since the third novel is coming out in 2023 I think I’m going to start the series soon.

I’m also excited for The Duchess Effect!!

  7. I absolutely cannot wait for Don’t Fear The Reaper; SGJ has become an automatic-buy for me since The Only Good Indians (like everybody else; I gave my barber a copy to tell his hunting buddies about). My Heart Is A Chainsaw was some of the most harrowing horror I’ve read in years, and I was surprised and terrified to see the sequel/trilogy announcement! He threatened us with a good time and he’s following through!

Tangentially, SJG made his comics earlier this year with an issue in Marvel Voices’ collection of comics by indigenous creators, and with his own ongoing series Earthdivers, which is about a group of Blackfeet kids in a ruined future-earth who decide that the only way to fix everything that’s gone wrong, as if you hadn’t guessed yet, is to go back in time and KILL COLUMBUS. The first issue is well worth a look into.

    1. Completely agree! The Only Good Indians was incredible and I love that you gave a copy to your barber. I need to read My Heart is a Chainsaw before the sequel comes out!

I had no idea that he had a comic! I just affed it to my wish list. Thanks for putting it on my radar! It sounds awesome!
