My Unpopular Book Opinions

I love a spice unpopular bookish opinion, so it was about time that I did this tag!

1. A Popular Book or series that you didn’t like.

I love whimsical and lyrical books and I actually expected more from The Night Circus. I wanted more detailed descriptions and atmosphere and vibes. I thought the plot was weak and I was not invested in the characters, but I could have gotten past that if I felt that the writing was more immersive.

I thought that The Nightingale was full of inconsistencies and cliches and it didn’t stand out among all the other WWII fiction that I have read.

2. A Popular Book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love.

I think the mixed reviews for both The Ballerinas and Love in the Time of Serial Killers come down to mismarketing. Neighter of these books are thrillers, though many of use have been lead to believe that they are. I enjoyed them both as character studies and seeing how our main characters open up to those around them.

3. A Love Triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with (warn ppl for spoilers) OR an OTP that you don’t like.

I do not think the couples in any of these books belong together and all of them had unhealthy relationships! I was rooting against them which is not what you want in a romance.

4. A popular book Genre that you hardly reach for.

Grimdark and other very specific subgenres of fantasy and I know that extreme horror is becoming more and more popular. I love watching videos of other people reading them but I don’t think I could stomach it myself!

5. A popular or beloved character that you do not like.

I settled on Darrow from Red Rising because I found him arrogant and holier-than-thou and I wish the story was told from any other perspective. I actually DNFed the series after Golden Son because I couldn’t stand another second of being in his head.

6. A popular author that you can’t seem to get into.

There are two authors who I have read multiple books from and want to love but something about their writing just does not click for me for whatever reason,a nd they are Maggie Stiefvater and VE Schwab. I love their premises but just never get along with the execution.

7. A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing. (examples “lost princess”, corrupt ruler, love triangles, etc.)

“We can’t be together because I am bad for you” This is a recent discovery for me. I have read a couple of books with this trope in the last couple of months and it really irritates me!

8. A popular series that you have no interest in reading.

There are a lot of fantasy series (Brandon Sanderson, Robin Hobb, etc)that I am always intrigued by but I know myself and I will never get to them. I just have to get over the FOMO and know thyself.

9. The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or T.V. show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

Crazy Rich Asians, The Devil Wears Prada, True Blood, Sharp Objects

  1. This was so spicy! I LOVE The Night Circus and True Blood (Southern Vampires) books way more than the show! Lol! But I agree with Crazy Rich Asians, the movie was perfection. Also, I find Sanderson’s work hit or miss – Stormlight Archives is amazing and I love those books so very much, but everything else of his I find difficult to get into. *shrug*

  2. I absolutely love your input on the Nightingale. I read it quite a few years ago, and I remember enjoying it, but now that I’ve read how you feel about it, I want to go back and see if I can find the inconsistencies and cliches too. Sort of like Where’s Waldo but novel version. I don’t remember much of the story, so it would be interesting to see how I feel about it now. Thank you so much for sharing this post 😃

  3. I liked The Night Circus but at the same time, I don’t think you’re wrong either – I think I hit it at a point where I was starved for stuff like that, rather than being very impressed…

  4. Fun tag! I can see where The Night Circus wouldn’t work for everyone. For me, I listened to it on audio, and so I probably enjoyed it more than I would have if I was reading it on my own. Jim Dale narrated the version I listened to, and he can make anything seem magical.

  5. I am totally with you on VE Schwab. I’ve only gotten through one of her books, and that was a struggle. It was a bummer, because the book sounded so good!

  6. Hard agree on Darrow! I positively hated him, and Golden Son is among my most detested books of all time 😁 The only reason I finished the series was because I got the whole boxed set as a Christmas present and felt bad about not reading it. So, although it took me about two years, I eventually read Morning Star. It wasn’t worth it 🙄
