I was kindly sent an ARC of Anywhere You Run (which is out now!) and I am really enjoying this. I have been struggling with thrillers lately, but this one sounds unique and I appreciate the historical setting. If I am going to love any thriller this year, I think it will be this one!
The Spare Man is another new release and I downloaded it from Scribd the day it came out because it sounds like something I will love. It is a murder mystery in space and I am only at the setup so far but I am having such a good time. Our main character is celebrating her honeymoon on a space liner and she has a service dog named Gimlet. There are also cocktail recipes sprinkled throughout, which is a bonus!
Just Finished
I finished What the Hex on audio in about an hour and it was a fun time! I already knew that I loved Alexis Daria, so it is no surprise that this witchy romance worked for me. It is set on an island close to Miami that only witches can have access to and our main character comes home from New York after being away for many years to find that her entire family is possessed by a demon. The only other person who is aware of this is her high school rival but they must work together to break the curse and maybe fall in love. It was really cute!
The Ghost Woods has solidified C.J. Cooke as one of my favourite authors. I read and loved The Lighthouse Witches last year, so I was excited to get another Gothic novel from her. This story is set at a house for unwed mothers and is told in two timelines that are set six years apart. As with any Gothic story, there is something off about this house and the people who live there. No one does atmosphere quite like C.J. Cooke does and I think if you are a fan of Mexican Gothic and/or What Moves the Dead, you will enjoy this one.
I so wanted to love The Nature of Witches, and I did at first, but this ended up being more about the romance than the plot, which was disappointing. I thought that the elemental magic was interesting and the conversations around climate change had potential, but that was all overshadowed by the angst. There was actually a different relationship that our main character had that was more intriguing to me. Also, this has one of my least favourite romance tropes but telling you which one would be a spoiler. I will say that this was fast-paced and I loved the setting!
Starting Next
Autumncrow is a collection of short stories all set in a town called Autumncrow Valley, where every night is Halloween. I will be reading this on the day of Halloween!
