WWW Wednesday is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words! All you have to do is answers the following three questions:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading

I have an ARC of The Change from HarperCollins Canada and it is out on May 3rd. This book is unlike anything I have ever read and I am so invested in it! It is a fantasy thriller following three women going through menopause and discovering that they have special gifts. I am only a few chapters in, but I am having five-star vibes already. It is feminist and the writing is compelling. I actually think that if you are a fan of The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, you will love this one. No vampires in this story (at least not yet!) but there is definitely a similarity in tone.

I am still listening to Not For Good Maidens. I took a break from it to read something for the Assassins in April readathon, but I am excited to dive back in. There is a lot of intrigue and I like the dual timelines that we are getting. I am a huge fan of retellings and I love that this one is a retelling of Golbin Market– so unique!

Just Finished

Don’t be surprised if you see The Golem and the Jinni near the top of my “best books of the year” list! I had no idea what to expect going into this but it blew away any assumptions that I had. I think I am a fan of historical fantasy and I need your recommendations! It was so obvious to me that Helene Wecker put a ton of research into writing this book, especially when it comes to the experiences of immigrants in New York during this time. It truly felt like the golem and the jinni were simply two immigrants among many and I appreciated that we got snapshots into the lives of people other than our main characters. There are a lot of great conversations about humanity and religion- I highly recommend buddy reading this one!

Grave Mercy has been on my TBR for years and I thought that the Assassins in April readathon was the perfect excuse to finally pick it up. Sadly, this book was not for me. I do think that it is a book that feels very much of its time (it was published in 2012) and I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it at that time. There were things that made me cringe, especially the character descriptions. I was also bored a lot of the time, which should not be the case in an assassin novel! The romance was meh to me and I just was not invested. I will not be continuing on with the series.

Starting Next

St. Martins Press sent me finished copy of The Night Shift and it was such a nice surprise! I have been thinking about it ever since and it is really calling out to me. I have read a page-turning thriller in a while! I have never read anything by Alex Finlay, but I have been hearing good things about this one. I enjoy thrillers that are told in two timelines and the fact that the first timeline is set in the early 2000s and follows a massacre at a Blockbuster definitely captivates me!

  1. I’m so glad you loved The Golem and the Jinni! I read it when it first came out, and thought it was beautifully written and so inventive. Are you planning to read the sequel? I probably will at some point, but I’ve been hesitant because it’s been so long since I read the first book.
