First Impression Friday

First Impression Friday is hosted by J.W. Martin.

First Impression Friday will be a meme where you talk about a book that you JUST STARTED! Maybe you’re only a chapter or two in, maybe a little farther.

Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions and predict what you’ll think by the end.

One girl’s nightmare is this girl’s faery tale

She’s a stunner.
Edinburgh, 1844. Eighteen-year-old Lady Aileana Kameron, the only daughter of the Marquess of Douglas, has everything a girl could dream of: brains, charm, wealth, a title—and drop-dead beauty.

She’s a liar.
But Aileana only looks the part of an aristocratic young lady. she’s leading a double life: She has a rare ability to sense the sìthíchean—the faery race obsessed with slaughtering humans—and, with the aid of a mysterious mentor, has spent the year since her mother died learning how to kill them.

She’s a murderer.
Now Aileana is dedicated to slaying the fae before they take innocent lives. With her knack for inventing ingenious tools and weapons—from flying machines to detonators to lightning pistols—ruthless Aileana has one goal: Destroy the faery who destroyed her mother.

She’s a Falconer.
The last in a line of female warriors born with a gift for hunting and killing the fae, Aileana is the sole hope of preventing a powerful faery population from massacring all of humanity. Suddenly, her quest is a lot more complicated. She still longs to avenge her mother’s murder—but she’ll have to save the world first.

I am reading The Falconer for the Lost Books book club. This is never a book I would have picked up on my own, and it was not even on my radar! It is the first book in a trilogy, and the last thing I need to do is start a new series, but here we are!

The Falconer was published in 2013, and it feels very much like that era of YA, but I am kind of loving that. There is something nostalgic about it! I am not the biggest lover of fae stories, but, so far, I am finding this one unique. I am only a few chapters in, so I have no idea where this book is going, but I am intrigued by our main character. There have been quite a few reveals about her already!

The first line is, “I have memorized their every accusation: Murderess. She did it. She was crouched over her mother’s body, covered in blood.” It is no wonder that I was captivated from the beginning.

Other readers in the Discord seem to be struggling with this book, so maybe the pace will change later on. We will see!

Have you read The Falconer? If yes, did you continue on with the series?
