Blogmas (Day Thirteen) | 2022 Releases I Cannot Wait to Get My Hand On

There are so many incredible books coming out in 2022 that it took me ages to come up with this list without sharing 100 books with you all. If you are curious about all of the 2022 releases that are on my TBR, check out my “2022 releases” shelf on Goodreads. This post is still going to be a long one because I couldn’t stop myself!

A spellbinding story about two girls whose friendship is so intense it not only threatens to destroy them, it changes the trajectory of history.

Marie Antoine is the charismatic, spoiled daughter of a sugar baron. At 12 years old, with her blond curls and her unparalleled sense of whimsey, she’s the leader of all the children in the Golden Mile, an affluent strip of 19th century Montreal. Until one day in 1873, when Sadie Arnett, dark-haired, sly, and brilliant, moves to the neighborhood.

Marie and Sadie are immediately united by their passion and intensity, and they attract and repel each other in ways that light each of them on fire. Marie with her bubbly charm sees the light and sweetness of the world, whereas Sadie’s obsession with darkness is all consuming. Soon their childlike games take on a thrill of danger and then become deadly.

Forced to separate, they spend their teenage years engaged in acts of alternating innocence and depravity–until a singular event unites them once more, with dizzying effects. And after Marie inherits her father’s sugar empire and Sadie disappears into the city’s gritty underworld, a revolution of the working class begins to foment. Each of them will have unexpected roles to play in events that upend their city–the only question is whether they will find each other once more.

Traveling from a repressive finishing school to a vibrant brothel, taking readers firsthand into the brutality of factory life and the opulent lives of Montreal’s wealthy, When We Lost Our Heads dazzlingly explores gender and power, sex and desire, class and status, and the terrifying power of the human heart when it can’t let someone go.

Heather O’Neill is one of my all-time favourite authors and The Lonely Hearts Hotel is in my top three books of all time. When We Lost Our Heads seems to follow similar themes as The Lonely Hearts Hotel, which excites me. I am intrigued by the idea that these two girls have an intense friendship that is all-consuming and dangerous. I also appreciate books that follow characters through several years.

In this young adult novel by award-winning author Anna-Marie McLemore, two non-binary teens are pulled into a magical world under a lake – but can they keep their worlds above water intact?

Everyone who lives near the lake knows the stories about the world underneath it, an ethereal landscape rumored to be half-air, half-water. But Bastián Silvano and Lore Garcia are the only ones who’ve been there. Bastián grew up both above the lake and in the otherworldly space beneath it. Lore’s only seen the world under the lake once, but that one encounter changed their life and their fate.

Then the lines between air and water begin to blur. The world under the lake drifts above the surface. If Bastián and Lore don’t want it bringing their secrets to the surface with it, they have to stop it, and to do that, they have to work together. There’s just one problem: Bastián and Lore haven’t spoken in seven years, and working together means trusting each other with the very things they’re trying to hide.

I adore Anna-Marie McLemore and the way that she writes magical realism. The cover for Lakelore is so haunting and the idea that there is an entire world beneath the lake. It also follows two characters who had a falling out and have to learn to work together, which is a trope I love.

In 1977, Claire Lake, Oregon, was shaken by the Lady Killer Murders: Two men, seemingly randomly, were murdered with the same gun, with strange notes left behind. Beth Greer was the perfect suspect–a rich, eccentric twenty-three-year-old woman, seen fleeing one of the crimes. But she was acquitted, and she retreated to the isolation of her mansion.

Oregon, 2017Shea Collins is a receptionist, but by night, she runs a true crime website, the Book of Cold Cases–a passion fueled by the attempted abduction she escaped as a child. When she meets Beth by chance, Shea asks her for an interview. To Shea’s surprise, Beth says yes.

They meet regularly at Beth’s mansion, though Shea is never comfortable there. Items move when she’s not looking, and she could swear she’s seen a girl outside the window. The allure of learning the truth about the case from the smart, charming Beth is too much to resist, but even as they grow closer, Shea senses something isn’t right. Is she making friends with a manipulative murderer, or are there other dangers lurking in the darkness of the Greer house?

Simone St. James is hands down my favourite mystery author and The Broken Girls and The Sun Down Motel are my go-to recommendations, so The Book of Cold Cases is high on my list of most anticipated list. Simone St. James has this special way of writing mysteries in dual timelines and I love the tagline, “Some crimes come back to haunt you.” I love the premise of this one and it sounds like the perfect book for fans of true crime. I also love that there is still the slight paranormal element that is quintessential Simone St. James.

I used to look at my hands with pride. Now all I can think is, “These are the hands that buried my mother.”

For Ning, the only thing worse than losing her mother is knowing that it’s her own fault. She was the one who unknowingly brewed the poison tea that killed her—the poison tea that now threatens to also take her sister, Shu.

When Ning hears of a competition to find the kingdom’s greatest shennong-shi—masters of the ancient and magical art of tea-making—she travels to the imperial city to compete. The winner will receive a favor from the princess, which may be Ning’s only chance to save her sister’s life.

But between the backstabbing competitors, bloody court politics, and a mysterious (and handsome) boy with a shocking secret, Ning might actually be the one in more danger.

A Magic Steeped in Poison has one of the most striking covers I have ever seen and the synopsis itself intrigues me. This is Judy I. Lin’s debut novel and the first in a series. The second book, A Venom Dark and Sweet, also comes out in 2022 and has an equally beautiful cover. I love that we are getting both books so close to one another. I also love books with a competition and the art of tea-making is something I have never read about before!

After a wild bet, gourmet grilled-cheese sandwich, and cuddle with a baby goat, Alexis Montgomery has had her world turned upside down. The cause: Daniel Grant, a ridiculously hot carpenter who’s ten years younger than her and as casual as they come—the complete opposite of sophisticated city-girl Alexis. And yet their chemistry is undeniable.

While her ultra-wealthy parents want her to carry on the family legacy of world-renowned surgeons, Alexis doesn’t need glory or fame. She’s fine with being a “mere” ER doctor. And every minute she spends with Daniel and the tight-knit town where he lives, she’s discovering just what’s really important. Yet letting their relationship become anything more than a short-term fling would mean turning her back on her family and giving up the opportunity to help thousands of people.

Bringing Daniel into her world is impossible, and yet she can’t just give up the joy she’s found with him either. With so many differences between them, how can Alexis possibly choose between her world and his?

This is cheating because I have already read an eARC of Part of Your World, but I cannot wait to have a copy of my romance shelves. Abby Jimenez has quickly become one of my favourite, if not my favourite, romance authors, and I think that Part of Your World is my favourite book of years. It is very loosely based on The Little Mermaid and has some of the same themes where both characters are part of very different worlds but are pulled towards one another. The setting gives me very much Stars Hollow vibes from Gilmore Girls and I love every second. Also, the chemistry! I really hope that this becomes a wildly popular romance when it comes out.

Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal–an experience that shocks him to his core.

Two centuries later a famous writer named Olive Llewellyn is on a book tour. She’s traveling all over Earth, but her home is the second moon colony, a place of white stone, spired towers, and artificial beauty. Within the text of Olive’s bestselling pandemic novel lies a strange passage: a man plays his violin for change in the echoing corridor of an airship terminal as the trees of a forest rise around him.

When Gaspery-Jacques Roberts, a detective in the black-skied Night City, is hired to investigate an anomaly in the North American wilderness, he uncovers a series of lives upended: The exiled son of an earl driven to madness, a writer trapped far from home as a pandemic ravages Earth, and a childhood friend from the Night City who, like Gaspery himself, has glimpsed the chance to do something extraordinary that will disrupt the timeline of the universe.

I really enjoyed The Glass Hotel and Station Eleven has been on my TBR for years. I really love Emily St. John Mandel’s writing and have a feeling that Sea of Tranquility is going to be my perfect blend of literary fiction and science fiction. Early reviews are already coming in and every single one I have seen has given this book five stars!

Growing up the daughter of notorious treasure hunter and absentee father Duke Wilder left Lily without much patience for the profession…or much money in the bank. But Lily is nothing if not resourceful, and now uses Duke’s coveted hand-drawn maps to guide tourists on fake treasure hunts through the red rock canyons of Utah. It pays the bills but doesn’t leave enough to fulfill her dream of buying back the beloved ranch her father sold years ago, and definitely not enough to deal with the sight of the man she once loved walking back into her life with a motley crew of friends ready to hit the trails. Frankly, Lily would like to take him out into the wilderness—and leave him there.

Leo Grady knew mirages were a thing in the desert, but they’d barely left civilization when the silhouette of his greatest regret comes into focus in the flickering light of the campfire. Ready to leave the past behind him, Leo wants nothing more than to reconnect with his first and only love. Unfortunately, Lily Wilder is all business, drawing a clear line in the sand: it’s never going to happen.

But when the trip goes horribly and hilariously wrong, the group wonders if maybe the legend of the hidden treasure wasn’t a gimmick after all. There’s a chance to right the wrongs—of Duke’s past and their own—but only if Leo and Lily can confront their history and work together. Alone under the stars in the isolated and dangerous mazes of the Canyonlands, Leo and Lily must decide whether they’ll risk their lives and hearts on the adventure of a lifetime.

Release Date: May 17th, 2022

Christina Lauren’s romances are hit or miss, but Something Wilder sounds like something different from them. It is a romance but it is also an adventure story and there is treasure?! I am definitely open to it and hope there is great banter and the second-chance romance trope is one of my favourites!

Feyi Adekola wants to learn how to be alive again.

It’s been five years since the accident that killed the love of her life and she’s almost a new person now—an artist with her own studio, and sharing a brownstone apartment with her ride-or-die best friend, Joy, who insists it’s time for Feyi to ease back into the dating scene. Feyi isn’t ready for anything serious, but a steamy encounter at a rooftop party cascades into a whirlwind summer she could have never imagined: a luxury trip to a tropical island, decadent meals in the glamorous home of a celebrity chef, and a major curator who wants to launch her art career.

She’s even started dating the perfect guy, but their new relationship might be sabotaged before it has a chance by the dangerous thrill Feyi feels every time she locks eyes with the one person in the house who is most definitely off-limits. This new life she asked for just got a lot more complicated, and Feyi must begin her search for real answers. Who is she ready to become? Can she release her past and honor her grief while still embracing her future? And, of course, there’s the biggest question of all—how far is she willing to go for a second chance at love?

Release Date: May 24th, 2022

Akwaeke Emezi is an auto-buy author for me, so of course, I am excited for You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty. This is their first romance and I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am for it. I love the range that Emezi has! This book sounds so beautiful and explores themes of grief, which Emezi is amazing at, and I think it is going to be very thoughtfully done.

New York Times bestselling author Grady Hendrix takes on the haunted house in a hilarious and terrifying new novel that explores the way your past—and your family—can haunt you like nothing else…

Release Date: July 12th, 2022

Grady Hendrix’s books can be hit or miss for me, with My Best Friend’s Exorcism and The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires being two of my favourite horror novels. I have yet to read The Final Girl Support Group because I heard so many mixed things. That said, I am still hopeful for How to Sell a Haunted House based on that title alone! We still don’t have a full synopsis, but I love a haunted house story and I am intrigued by the idea of exploring that our family can haunt us more than anything else.

She has a million followers on social media.

She uses her fashion-forward eye to pick the perfect angle and filter on every photo.

She’s iconic.

She’s a trend-setter.

She’s Marie Antoinette, the year is 3070, and she’s arrived in the Franc Kingdom to marry the prince, secure an alliance, and rake in likes from her fans.

Versailles is not the perfect palace Marie’s seen on The Apps. Her life is a maze of pointless rules, and the court watches her every move for mistakes. Her shy husband Louis is more interested in horses and computer-hacking than producing heirs. Versailles seems like a dream full of neon-lit statues, handsome android soldiers, and parties till dawn. Under the surface, it’s a creepy den of secrets: surveillance in Marie’s bedroom, censored news feeds, disappearing courtiers.

When Marie and Louis become king and queen long before they’re ready to rule, any efforts to aid their suffering subjects are stamped out by the mega-corporations of the First Estate. Between riots in Paris and image-wrecking social media firestorms, Marie can’t afford to lose her head. Using her social media savvy and Louis’ hacking knowledge, they try to fix their reputations and change their kingdom for the better, but the royals may find it’s already too late. They’re ruling over the end of an era.

Release Date: August 9th, 2022

Marie Antoinette living in the year 3070 where she is an influencer? How good does that sound!? Also, Cake Eater has to be one of the coolest covers ever. I bet it is striking in person! There is so much going on in this synopsis and I am here for all of it.

A reimagining of the Chinese military epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, in which a strategist must help her warlordess to victory against the rival kingdoms to the north and the south while overcoming her fate as written by the gods. Publication is scheduled for fall 2022.

Release Date: November 8th, 2022

I absolutely loved The Ones We’re Meant to Find by Joan He and am so curious to see what she writes next. There is not even a full synopsis for Strike the Zither yet, but I know I am going to read it! What we do know about it intrigues me and Joan He has said we should expect backstabbing and rivals to lovers. Yes, please! It is also a duology, with the second book coming out in 2023.

  1. The Marie Antoinette book is catching but it does make me a little sad to think we’d still have social media and influences in 3070 not to mention heartless corporations!
