Ghostly Book Recommendations

Give me all the ghostly books! I love spooky books this time of year, and I am especially drawn to ghost stories and haunted houses. I have read some fantastic ones over the last few years and I wanted to share them with you all.

I just finished The Death of Jane Lawrence and posted a review with all of my thoughts and feelings. There is a lot going on in this book, but the haunted house and the atmosphere are what will stay with me. It has everything that I love in Gothic horror! It’s definitely a ghostly book for fans of classics like Rebecca and Jane Eyre.

Summer Sons is another recent read for me, and I cannot stop thinking about it! If you are looking for a dark academia novel with paranormal elements, this is the one for you. I truly think fans of The Secret History will appreciate this one, though it is less dense and I think more spooky. It is also LGBT and had a bit of a romance.

White Smoke is the book that made me want to put this list together! It is Tiffany D. Jackson’s first foray into horror and she nailed it. This might be a bold statement, but I think it is my favourite haunted house story. There are so many twists and turns and I was shocked by how it all came together. The ending will be hit or miss, but I think that is true for most of Tiffany D. Jackson’s endings.

It feels like I am always recommending The House of Salt and Sorrows because of how much it surprised me! The ghosts were at the forefront of this story and it was so amazing. I need to read Erin A. Craig’s newest release, Small Favors, because the writing and setting were fantastic in her debut.

The more I think and talk about Plain Bad Heroines, the more I think it is one of my top three favourite books of all time. There is something so special and original about it! It is paranormal, historical fiction, contemporary, dark academia, romance, and mystery all wrapped into one. It had the potential to be a complete disaster, but I thought it was close to perfect. I might just like a haunted school a little bit more than a haunted house!

Ghosts and romance! Everything you need in a book! I absolutely adored Cemetery Boys and one of the main characters is a ghost and is probably my favourite character. There is so much to love about this one!

I adore Simone St. James and she was one of my favourite discoveries of 2020! I could not choose a favourite between The Sun Down Motel and The Broken Girls. They are both amazing ghosts story- one set in a motel and the other in an abandoned all-girls boarding school. I cannot wait for her new book, which comes out next year.

The Widow of Rose House is a Gothic romance that takes place in a haunted house, though I will say that the ghost story plays second to the romance, and I was okay with that. The love interest is so damn sweet and I enjoyed every second!

Sing, Unburied, Sing is a more literary fiction ghost story and it is so beautiful and moving. It had me in absolute tears! I keep meaning to read more from Jesmyn Ward because I loved her writing style!
