Fall TBR | Give Me All the Fantasy and Spooky Books!

I know that I didn’t do tell well sticking with my summer TBR, but I am much more confident with my fall one! I think it is because I know what I will be in the mood for this time of year- anything spooky, atmospheric, dark, or fantastical! I hope to do some major read this season, but here are 10 books I hope to prioritize over the next couple of months.

The ARCS

The Death of Jane Lawrence wasn’t initially on my radar until I received an ALC from Netgalley and now I cannot wait to read it! It sounds like it is in the same vein as Rebecca and Jane Eyre and is definitely Gothic horror. It is about a woman who has a marriage of convenience and is told never to visit her husband’s family manor. Of course she does and she finds her husband is there not acting like himself and believes that Jane is an apparition. He wakes up the next day acting normally and doesn’t remember anything from the night before. I am definitely intrigued!

The Keeper of Night was an eARC I requested after the HCC Frenzy event because it sounds so incredible! I was then approved for an ALC from Netgalley, so I have no excuse not to get to it soon! It follows Ren, who is a British Reaper and a Japanese Shinigami living in Britain who is forced to flee to Japan and becomes the Goddess of Death. Does that not sound incredible!?

Iron Widow has been everywhere and it has such an interesting and unique premise! Our main character is an Iron Widow, which means she is able to form physic connections with others which can help her pilot these robots that often kill female pilots because of the mental strain. I have seen some great reviews!

The Buddy Reads

I will be reading both The Woods Are Always Watching and The Witch Haven for my buddy reads group on Instagram. I would never have picked up The Woods are Always Watching on my own, especially since it has such a low rating on Goodreads, but we read its companion novel, There’s Someone Inside Your House, two years ago and had fun with it. The movie also comes out in October! The Woods Are Always Watching is a survival story about two girls lost in the woods, which is a premise I tend to enjoy.

The Witch Haven has everything I could want, at least from what I can tell from the synopsis! It takes place at a magical school and the main character is being torn between good and dark magic. Sounds like a good time to me!

I read Magic Lessons when it first came out last year and I believe I will be buddy reading it with a fellow booktuber (Kristen @ Kristen is Fully Booked). I don’t reread often, but this is my favourite book in my favourite witchy series and it is a prequel to Practical Magic. It is just so interesting. The Book of Magic is a sequel to Practical Magic and it is also the conclusion, so I think it will be about the end of the curse. I cannot wait!

The Backlist

I read Jade City earlier this year and fell in love with it! I wanted to read Jade War right away but decided to save it so I could read it closer to the release of the third and final book, Jade Legacy. I love these characters and Fonda Lee is a brilliant author!

I actually have the box set of the All Souls Trilogy, so ideally I would read the entire series this fall, but we know how I am with series! I read do want to at least read A Discovery of Witches and I would love to watch the TV series as well. I need more witch books and I believe this one is a romance between a witch and a vampire.

If you watch Booktube, you probably are seeing They Never Learn everywhere. I know I am and I am intrigued. It is a dark academia/thriller and it follows a professor who murders terrible men. Sign me up!

I am so excited for all of these books and for fall in general. What is a book you hope to read this fall?

  1. This is such a great TBR and likewise I can’t wait to read spooky and dark books for the autumn! I’m halfway through The Witch Haven and adoring it, I can’t wait to finish and I look forward to seeing what you think of it! 🙂

  2. I really liked A Discovery of Witches!

    Happy TTT!

  3. What a great list! I do want to read both of the Alice Hoffman books. I loved Practical Magic, and picked up a copy of The Rules of Magic last year, so I really should get to it. I hope you enjoy A Discovery of Witches! I love the trilogy so much — I’ve been thinking of doing a reread. Hope you enjoy your fall reading!

      1. I like so much about it, but especially that the characters are adults (no sparkly teen vampires), and there’s an academic setting that makes the whole story feel deeper than typical supernatural reads. I hope you enjoy it!
