WWW Wednesday (September 8th, 2021)

WWW Wednesday is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words! All you have to do is answers the following three questions:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading

I am about 80 pages into She Who Became the Sun and it is brilliant so far. I was hooked from the first page and I am so intrigued by this world and the politics. It is being compared to The Song of Achilles and Mulan. I am not getting the The Song of Achilles parallels, but I am sure I will by the end of the book. I definitely see the comparison to Mulan, as our main character is a young girl who is pretending to be her brother in order to live and study at a monastery. I was intimidated by this book at first, but I connected with it instantly and the writing is perfect. I am shocked that this is Shelley Parker-Chan’s debut!

I was sent an ALC from Netgalley of Certain Dark Things and I am so glad that I did because I don’t think I would have made it a priority otherwise. At 15% in, I am already having so much fun with this and it is has everything that I love about vampire novels. From what I can tell, we are following three perspectives- Alt, who is a vampire and a descendent of the Aztec, Domingo, a street kid who Alt pays to feed on, and then a group of people who are hunting Alt. I appreciate that there are different types of vampires, some who can eat humans food and others who can’t, those who can be in the sun and those who cannot, for example. It makes for a more interesting and dynamic story!

Just Finished

I have actually read four books since the beginning of September. and I have plans to write reviews of all of them. Check out my review of Hold Back the Tide if you want to hear more about an underrated horror novel! White Smoke is the book I finished most recently and it just so happens to be one of my most anticipated releases of the year! I was so excited to receive an eARC from HarperCollins Canada! White Smoke is Tiffany D. Jackson’s first horror novel and she nailed it, which doesn’t surprise me at all. She compared this book to Get Out, and I definitely see that! I also think if you loved Ace of Spades, you need to check out White Smoke when it comes out on September 14th. It was so haunting and I had no idea where the story was going!

Starting Next

I am not sure what physical book I will read next, especially since I think She Who Became the Sun will take me some time, but I will definitely be listening to The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina next! I am in such a horror mood, so I am trying to embrace it. I also feel like I have not read enough witchy books this year, and I think that this book has an element of that.

      1. Yes, I was so happy about that, a nice surprise to be first in line!

And I have a feeling I’m going to love it – Tiffany never disappoints!

  2. This sounds great! I need to get my book life in order too! I’ve trapped my nerve again in my back so I might try and organise myself as I have no motivation to do anything!
