My Desert Island Books

I went back and forth when putting this list together! I wasn’t sure what a desert island book meant to me. I ultimately went with a list of books I could reread again and again and never get tired of. There are so many layers to most of these books, so I think I could take something new away each time I read them. I also think they would be good distractions and would keep my mind sharp!

Never Let Me Go is my favourite book of all time, so of course it is my ultimate desert island book! Cannery Row is my favourite classic and is probably the book I have reread the most. Hamnet is one of the best books I have read in recent years and one I can not stop thinking about. Piranesi and Project Hail Mary are the two books that are fighting for my best books of the year, at least from what I have read so far.

Of course I would need to take Pride and Prejudice with me- it is the ultimate romance and I could not be parted from Mr. Darcy. Plain Bad Heroines might be a surprising choice, but it is a longer novel and there is so much going on and so many characters, so I think it could keep me entertained for awhile. The Fifth Season is such a brilliant book, and I know that a lot of it went over my head the first time I read it, so imagine have all this time to reread it over and over again and being able to analyze everything about it!? City of Girls is another long one, but it is more fun and light-hearted while having some deeper themes- it would be like a breath of fresh air! Bitter Orange is simply a book I adore and could see myself continuing to love no matter how many times I read it.

  1. Never Let Me Go, Piranesi and Project Hail Mary are all on my TBR and you just bumped them up on the soonish TBR list. Dune world be my Desert Island Book, but maybe also The Way of Kings. 😻

      1. I can’t recommend it enough! Especially since it’s coming to the screen very soon! I hope the movie does the book justice!

  2. These are great picks, I loved Hamnet and Piranesi. I considered East of Eden, but I haven’t read Cannery Row and clearly I should. I included Emma on my list, it’s my favorite Austen.

  3. These are fantastic choices, and although they weren’t on my list (probably because I didn’t think to include more recent reads), I could definitely see wanting Piranesi, Project Hail Mary, and Plain Bad Heroines with me on a desert island!

  4. I agree that Piranesi is definitely a desert island book! Not only is it VERY good, I’m sure that I could reread it and be just an engrossed as the first time.

  5. I’ve had Piranesi on my list of books to read for the past two months but I’ve been struggling to read it. I haven’t been able to get past the first two pages. But now that you say it’s fighting for a spot on your best books of the year, maybe I’ll try harder at reading it

  6. I agree with your defination for desserted island book. I think you would also want some books that help you survive! I would add Harry Potter to that list and some sort of DK book.

  7. I am excited to read Piranesi. I definitely couldn’t go to a desert island without Pride and Prejudice—or how about one of those compilations of her work? 🤣
