Books I Read In One Sitting (or would have if I had the time)

I have been in a bit of a reading slump and something I like to do when I find myself in that situation is to pick up a fast-paced book that I can read in one sitting. So, I will be sharing ten books I either read in one sitting or could have read in one sitting, and I am so looking forward to getting recommendations from everyone else’s posts and in the comments.

I could have included any of Elizabeth Acevedo’s books on this list, especially the ones written in verse, but settled on The Poet X, which is her debut. I remember reading it for the first time and knowing that Acevedo was something special. I always read her books the day that they are released! The Poet X is brilliant on audio, and Acevedo herself narrates it and brings her characters to life.

Speaking of adaptations, Blackout is being adapted by Michelle and Barack Obama- how freaking cool is that!? I normally read anthologies slowly, but I could not put Blackout down. Each of the stories was outstanding and so feel-good. I loved how connected the stories were and the fact that they each take place during a blackout in NYC was so fun. It has been a long time since a book brought me so much joy. It is also a shorter collection!

Finlay Donovan is Killing It was absolutely hilarious! I had so much fun with this one, though I did have to suspend my disbelief at some points. I had to know where this story was going and what other shenanigans Finlay would find herself in. I could not believe how quickly I read this one- it felt like no time at all. It is also being adapted by the creator of Pretty Little Liars!

I think all of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books could be read in one sitting. No one writes characters quite like she does and her pacing is always perfect! I absolutely fell in love with Malibu Rising, both the characters and the setting. I was so invested in Nina that I had to know where her story went. I also loved that we got flashbacks, as it broke up the story a bit and kept me interested. A perfect beach read!

I read The One with my best friend last summer and we loved every second. I definitely recommend buddy reading it if you can because there is so much to talk about! It follows a ton of characters, which could have been overwhelming, but I was interested in them all. I thought the premise of finding your soulmate through DNA was intriguing and the fact that it is also a thriller just made it even more of a page-turner. It has already been adapted on Netflix, but I haven’t watched it yet!

Don’t Look For Me is one of my favourite thrillers, and what I loved most is that I picked it up on a whim and was not expecting much from it. The way it is told adds to the suspense and tension. It was just so incredible. Go into this one knowing as little as you can!

Punching the Air is written in verse and it is one of those books that I think is best read in one sitting. It will only take a couple hours and it is so worth it! There is something about YA contemporary written in verse that hits me in a different way. I was truly moved by this book and it is one I know I will return to again and again.

Trust me and everyone else on this one, you will not be able to put Sadie down, especially if you listen to it on audio. The podcast elements makes it a unique book to listen to and I was so invested in Sadie and her search for her sister’s killer. I distinctly remember ignoring all my responsibilities in order to finish it. I wish I could read it again for the first time!

I had no idea that I would end up reading The Switch as quickly as I did. I just sat in a chair one afternoon taking this story in. I will say that it is pitched as a romance, but it is really a story about a grandmother and her granddaughter. The family has experienced a tragedy and they decide they need to shake things up, so they move into one another’s homes and essentially switch lives. It was so sweet and charming, but the romances are not what makes this book memorable for me!

At 427 pages, Boyfriend Material is quite long for a contemporary romance and you might not think it is one you can read in one sitting, but I am always here for fake dating and the banter in this book was everything. I was so invested in this relationship that I had to see how it would all play out!

There we have it! Ten books I read in one sitting! I would love to know the last book you read in one sitting!

  1. I loved The Switch, Malibu Rising was great (Daisy Jones was better) and The Poet X–WOW. But, honestly? I couldn’t read them in one sitting. I’d have to stop and digest. That’s what is so fun about these posts each week–seeing other’s reading lives. I love see that you would devour them. That’s fun for this geeky-librarian!

  2. I’m very much looking forward to reading Finlay Donovan! Everything I hear about it is delightful! Hm… last book I read in one sitting. I believe it was either The Guncle by Steven Rowley or The Perfect Stranger by Anne Gracie!
