I am such a sucker for a good cover, so I am excited about this week’s topic!
It’s impossible not to sometimes judge books by the cover – what makes a book beautiful to you?
There are so many things! I like a whole range of cover designs- from colourful to super simple. I think I just appreciate a well-designed cover that is striking in some way. It really is a gut thing!
Are there certain covers you’re drawn towards, and certain styles you stay away from?
I don’t think a bad cover will stop me from reading a book that I am already interesting, but it certainly won’t grab my attention and get me to pick it off the shelves at a bookstore. So I don’t think there are any that I intentionally stay away from, but I will say that I am less likely to read a book with a photo of a person on the cover- they just don’t appeal to me at all! Now if it is an illustration of a person, that is a completely different story.
I have really fallen in love with the new trends in romance lately. Give me a cute illustrated cover and I am sold!
I have also noticed that I am instantly drawn to books with floral designs or that are really bright and stand out on my shelves.
Something that is underrated is a gorgeous spine! The spine is what we see when the book is on the shelf, so I always appreciate when a spine is given special attention as well.
What are some of the most beautiful covers you’ve seen?
This is just the tip of the iceberg!! There are so many covers that I think are absolutely stunning, but these are the ones that instantly came to mind.

I don’t participate in these, but I love how open-ended the question is. With the Fire on High has one of my favorite covers, it’s aesthetically pleasing. Some of the trends I’ve seen some of them I’m not really liking.

High-five from another reader who judges by a cover often; I totally agree with your sentiments about floral designs (always gorgeous), and I didn’t even think about the spines. In terms of picking it off the shelf, the cover is more important to me, but you’re absolutely right – if you’re going to purchase it, it better have a nice spine because that’s all you’ll see on the shelf!

Yes! Totally agree about the spines. People often forget to mention them when they are often what first draws you to a book if you are browsing in the bookstore without any plans on what to buy. I did a whole post once on book spines I like. I’m planning to do another soon.
Fun topic! Our library/local paper collaborate on a yearly 12-month reading challenge. One of the catgories this year is “a book with an ugly cover”. Great discussions because everyone has their own opinions on beauty!
I’m doing a reading challenge and that is one of the prompts as well. Haven’t decided on which book to read yet!
