Quotes From My First Four Reads of 2021

I have read seven books so far in 2021, but one of them was a graphic novel and the other was a thriller, so neither of those had any quotes that I highlighted. I also want to share my favourite Legendborn quotes in a separate post because there are so many! I thought now was the perfect time to share some of my favourite quotes from a few of the books I have read recently. This is something I used to do more often and want to bring it back! I love sharing and reading quotes- I think they can tell you something about the book and the writing style.

“All human life has its seasons, and no one’s personal chaos can be permanent: winter, after all, does not last forever, does it?”

“When Perry sat down in front of the judge to be arraigned, Truman nudged Nelle. “Look, his feet don’t touch the floor!” Nelle said nothing, but thought, “ Oh, oh! This is the beginning of a great love affair.” In fact, their relationship was more complicated than a love affair: each looked at the other and saw, or thought he saw, the man he might have been.”

“Any woman who took his advice, whatever her age or position in life, he looked upon as his protégée, a work of art that needed only his word or hand to bring her to perfection.”

“I was having an emotion, and I hate that.”

“Disinformation, which is the same as lying but for some reason has a different name, is the top tactic in corporate negotiation/warfare.”

“I wanted so badly to please him and my mom. I was simply incapable. What happens when you live with a tiger that you can’t please is that you’re always afraid.”

“You never know who’s going to hold the keys to the castle. It’s tempting to think you’re too important to speak to the young intern who’s been sent to interview you or the blogger who only has fifty followers. But if they approach you respectfully and earnestly, you should never be so stupid and arrogant as to dismiss them. If you brush off one too many smart kids, you’re bound to make a lifelong enemy out of a future media mogul.”

“The paradox for the workaholic is that rock bottom is the top of whatever profession they’re in.”

“If you want to help her, you need to help yourself first. No one serves their friends by grinding themselves into dust on the altar of compassion.”

“She was ordinary. She was remarkable. Of such commonplace contradictions are weapons made.”

“In the way of bookish children, she carried her books into trees and along the banks of chuckling creeks, weaving her way along their slippery shores with the sort of grace that belongs only to bibliophiles protecting their treasures.”

  1. Kristin!! Oh goodness! It’s only the 12th day of the year and you’ve already finished 5 BOOKS? I’m only on book 2, 😐

Oh btw, this is such an great idea! D’you mind if I use this for one of my posts?

  2. That is seriously impressive – I’m been stuck on a history of Europe with extremely small type since just before New Year and I’ve only got to the end of the Middle Ages! It’s a good book to send you to sleep at night, but I’m beginning to yearn for some fiction again (although I wonder if I can deal with the guilt of setting the history book aside).

The quote about pleasing your tiger Mum in the David Chang book is really interesting – exactly the experience I had – but I reckon my next book will be Rose Tremain’s new one about medicine in the 19th century. She’s such a brilliant novelist that I read everything by her, and I’m not put off if I don’t fancy the subject matter, as with other writers…

Thank you for the blog, Kristin – it’s really reassuring, somehow, to connect with someone as book obsessed as me, especially at a time when reading has acquired extra importance (as a means of escape and wonder, etc). Look forward to your next recommendations!
