Books I Want to Read in 2021 + Update

I posted a similar post to this one at the beginning of 2020, and I thought it would be fun to include a quick update on if I read any of the books on that list and how I felt about them.

Of the seven books I wanted to read in 2020, I manage to read only three of them. Thankfully, I did love them! I wasn’t sure what I would think about An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, but it really took me by surprise. I loved the conversation about social media. I am not at all surprised that I loved Conversations With Friends, as Normal People is a favourite of mine. However, it is not a book I would universally recommended. I finally finished The Illuminae Files, and Gemina was the standout for me.

I read two books by Grady Hendrix (My Best Friend’s Exorcism and The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires) in 2020, and I loved how campy they were. I am hoping that Horrorstör has the same tone! I need to track down a physical copy, as it is formatted like an IKEA catalogue, which is so unique!

Monday’s Not Coming is the last of Tiffany D. Jackson’s books that I have to read. I have no doubt that I will get to it soon and love it!

One of my goals for 2021 is to read more of N.K. Jemisin’s books, starting with completing The Broken Earth trilogy.

I have had Know My Name on my shelves for over a year, but I was just not mentally ready to read it in 2020. I really hope that I can pick it up in 2021, as I know it is going to be a powerful read for me.

I received a boxset of the All Souls Trilogy for Christmas, and I cannot wait to dive into it. I have been wanting to watch the show, but I have to read the books first, of course.

I have been meaning to read something from Joyce Carol Oates for years and I also have a fascination with Marilyn Monroe, so Blonde sounds like my kind of book. It is also being made into a movie!

I want to read a few food memoirs in 2021, starting with Eat a Peach!

The Golem and the Jinni has been on my radar for years, and I have embraced fantasy, so now is the time!

I have both a physical copy and the audiobook of The Starless Sea, so I have no excuses as to why I haven’t read it yet!

Jade City was everywhere in 2020, and I have a feeling I am going to love it. As soon as I heard it was being adapted, I knew that I had to make it a priority.

What is one book you want to prioritize in 2021?

  1. I watched the show first and read the books afterwards for the All Souls trilogy and I have to say I much prefer the show *hides* but I hope you have a great time either way!!
My friend is also currently devouring Jade City and Jade War and they love it so much, it makes me want to pick it up too, but I have too many backlisted books I need to get to first.

  2. So many good books! I loved the All Souls Trilogy and I really want to start watching the show – it looks superbly cast.

I got half way through The Starless Sea and got….lost. I should really pick it back up and finish it!

    Have a wonderful year!

  3. Ohh, I loved Gemina and Horrorstör!! I still want to read other books by Grady Hendrix… sadly the library doesn’t have them, but I am considering paying so they can get it from another library.

  4. This year, I actually want to try and tackle a few classics that I’ve been meaning to read for a while like Moby Dick, War and Peace, A Tale of Two Cities, Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Gulliver’s Travels.

  5. Horrorstör is such a fun read! I also highly recommend Grady Hendrix’s non-fiction book, Paperbacks From Hell. It’s a weird and wonderful tour of the world of pulp horror. Definitely one of my favourite non-fiction books of 2020!

  6. We have some similar books on this list 🙂
I hope you can get to all of them!

  7. I’d love to read Starless Sea and one of NK Jemisin’s books this year too.
Oh! I really liked Horrorstor, especially that edition of it. Totally worth reading that one. It was so weird to visit Ikea after reading it. I never look at the store the same again, lol!

  8. So many great books! I love The Golem & the Jinni, and the All Souls books. (Can’t wait for season 2 of A Discovery of Witches — the show is very good). I’d like to read the Broken Earth books this year too. Good luck, and enjoy!

  9. Jade City and A Discovery of Witches are both books I want to pick up too! I’ve heard amazing things about the Broken Earth trilogy as well so that’s one I’m hoping to start and finish this year.

  10. Great list! The Broken Earth trilogy, The Starless Sea and The Golem and the Jinni we all on my tbr for this year as well ☺️I think I’m most excited for The Golem and the Jinni though!
