Thank you so much to Caffeine and Books for tagging me to do The Spooky Memes Book Tag (v2). I was looking for a Halloween-themed tag to write this week, and this one could not be more perfect and original!
Rules:
If you’d like to check out the original tag, go here! If you’d like to do that tag, do it!
- Link back to Emily’s blog
- Use the banner if you want, and don’t forget to copy the memes for each question!

Name a character that keeps repeating the same mistakes, despite having multiple opportunities to prevent them
It seems as though readers either love or hate Sally Rooney’s novels, and, though I personally love them, I can understand why others wouldn’t. The characters in Conversations With Friends make the same mistakes over and over again expecting different results, and it can be frustrating to read. However, I think that that is human, and that is why I connect with Rooney’s stories so much. Her characters are messy and often unlikeable, but that is why they are relatable, at least to me.
Name a book where the characters got their just desserts
I love the main character in The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, and I found myself so protective of her. She comes into contact with some truly awful people, many of whom end up getting what they deserve. I would get a thrill every single time that happened!
Name a book that tries to put a positive spin on something terrible
From Scratch is one of my favourite memoirs- one that can bring a tear to my eye just thinking about it. Tembi Locke lost her husband to cancer, and this memoir is about how that affects her life and how she grows closer to her late husband’s Sicilian family. Locke’s story is devastating, but it is also one of hope and resilience. It is so beautiful to read about how her relationship with her in-laws transforms and grows as she spends summers in Sicily!
Name a book that delves into an existential topic
If you read yesterday’s post, you will know that I am currently reading The Midnight Library. I feel as though all of Haig’s work has existential themes that make you think about your purpose. I find myself putting down The Midnight Library every so often just so I can reflect on the story and its meaning. I want to share the first page of the novel with you so you have an idea of what I mean:
“Between life and death there is a library, and within that library, the shelves go on forever. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be if you had made other choices… Would you have done anything different, if you had the chance to undo your regrets?”
What trope or theme in a book do you really like that you don’t feel gets enough attention?
There are not enough books out there that talk about friend breakups, or at least I haven’t found them. Romantic breakups are so common in fiction, but what about the heartache of ending a friendship? I don’t think that this is talked about enough in society in general. I would love recommendations for books about friendship breakups! I think it is something that most people experience.
Name a characters whose humor is consistently underappreciated by those around them
I understand how morally grey Loki is and how frustrating that must be for the people around him, but common- he is hilarious!
Name a book (or two or three) that has helped you get through this year
For me, it hasn’t been a particular book but a genre. Contemporary romance has provided me a lot of comfort this year and I have found some new all time favourites, including Take a Hint Danie Brown, Boyfriend Material, and You Had Me at Hola. However, more recently, thrillers have been a great distraction.
What are your plans for Halloween this year if you celebrate it? How do you plan on spending what’s left of October?
Trick-or-treating is happening in my city, so I will be giving out full-size chocolate bars to all the kiddos! We usually get around 200 kids, but, with Covid, I am not sure if that number will be higher or lower. It is impossible to know how much chocolate to buy! I am also brainstorming ways to incorporate a mask into my costume. Would love any suggestions!
