I wish that I got more book recommendations in real life, but I tend to be the person people come to for recommendations rather than vice versa. That is why most of the recommendations that I receive are from fellow book bloggers. I thought this would be the perfect time to share the best books I have read because of this wonderful community! Many of these books never would have been on my radar if it were not for fellow bloggers and they all pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me something about my reading tastes.
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
I am someone who is incredibly intimidated by high fantasy, and I never would have picked up The Fifth Season without a push from the book community. It has become one of my favourite books of all time. It is trully brilliant! It made me realize that I can love high fantasy and, once I finish this series, I want to explore the genre more. I also want to read all of N.K. Jemisin’s backlist titles.
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing is one of those books that I had preconceived notions about, and so I avoided it. Then I began to see some interesting reviews and I realized that the book touched on my themes that I am interesting in. It is light SciFi and is a commentary on social media. The premise also sounded similar to my favourite series of all time, The Themis Files. I decided to take a chance and trust what other reviewers were telling me, and I am so glad that I did. This book was fun, hilarious, and surprisingly thought-provoking. I think about it a lot and cannot wait to read the sequel!
Sadie by Courtney Summers
When Sadie first came out it was all anyone could talk about and I resisted the hype for awhile but was recommending it this summer when I needed a really engaging audiobook to listen to, and Sadie delivered! I am not one of those people who cannot stop talking about this book. It is unlike anything else I have ever read and was much darker than I could have imagined.
The Mothers by Brit Bennett
The Mothers is a book that had been on my radar for awhile. but I don’t know that I would have prioritized it if it were not for the hype around Brit Bennett’s latest novel, The Vanishing Half. While I have read and loved both her books, it is The Mothers that has stayed with me. I think that this is the perfect example of who book bloggers cannot only introduce you to a new favourite books, but also to a favourite author. I will read anything that Bennett writes!
The Dutch House by Ann Patchett
Ann Patchett is an author I had been meaning to read from for years! The hype around The Dutch House and the audiobook being narrated by Tom Hanks was the push that I needed. This ended up being exactly the kind of book I adore, and I cannot wait to read more from her.
Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert
I really have book bloggers to thank for reigniting my love of contemporary romance. I used to love the genre but moved away from it for many years. The bookish community has highlight so many diverse romances and many of them have become favourites of mine. Get a Life, Chloe Brown and Take a Hint, Dani Brown are merely two of these. The Bride Test and Boyfriend Material also come to mind!
The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell
Book blogging has helped me to discover what I love in mysteries, and The Family Upstairs has it all- it is atmospheric, has a creepy house and amazing twist, and the characters are memorable. There are so many thrillers/mysteries out there that I would have no idea which ones to pick up if it were not for reviews from fellow bloggers.
City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert
City of Girls is a book I know that I never would have picked up if it were not for book bloggers. I read Eat, Pray, Love when it was popular and I really disliked it. I never thought that I would pick up another one of Gilbert’s books! I then noticed that many other readers who also didn’t love Eat, Pray, Love were raving about this one and I was curious. So glad that I trusted their reviews because City of Girls is now one of my favourite books!
All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries #1) by Martha Wells
All Systems Red was one of my first introductions into SciFi, and I quickly fell in love with the genre. I had seen it on my lists about light SciFi, and I truly think that this is the perfect series to pick up if you are looking to dip your toe into SciFi. I have read only the first two books in the series so far, and they are both just over 100 pages. I need to be in this world again, and I just downloaded the audiobook of the third book, Rogue Protocol. The sixth book is coming out in 2021, so I need to catch up!
Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children #1) by Seanan McGuire
As you may know, I am terrible at finishing series so I have only read the first three books in the Wayward Children series, but I love how unique they all are. It is no secret how beloved these books are within the bookish community! The second book, Down Among the Sticks and Bones, is my favourite so far and I know that the newest release, Come Tumbling Down, follows the same characters, so I need to catch up. The good thing is that each of the books is around 200 pages and they are so whimsical and fun that they read quickly.
