End of Summer Recap (Tag)

I did this tag for the first time last year, and it is one of those tags that is interesting to look back on year after year. I tend to do a lot of reading over the summer, so it is fun to take an opportunity to reflect on all the books I read during the hot summer months.

What book can you not stop thinking about?

19161852

Believe the hype on this one! The writing is beautiful and Jemisin has created such an intricate and fascinating world, one that I cannot stop thinking about. There were moments throughout the book that caught me by complete surprise and have stayed with me. There is so much going on that I think I need to reread The Fifth Season to have full understand of its themes and to be prepared for the next book.

Which book would you rather not have read?

48842144

There are truly no books that I regret reading this summer, but The Shadows was definitely the most forgettable. I could not tell you how this book ended or who the characters were. That said, it was entertaining in the moment!

What genre did you read the most?

I have to say that I am so surprised that I have read so many fantasy/SciFi novels and mystery/thriller novels, as they are typically my least read genres! I give buddy reads and book clubs credit for pushing me out of my comfort zone this summer. I am not surprised to see that I read 9 romance novels- summer is when I crave all the romance! Now that we are getting into autumn, I suspect that I will read more historical fiction and non-fiction.

Which book surprised you the most?

I will forever thank Libro fm for sending me an ALC of Raybearer, as I am not sure that I would have picked it up otherwise. Raybearer will end up being one of my best books of the year, which never happens for me with a YA fantasy! Ifueko has created memorable characters and built a world and magic system that is so unique.

Which book disappointed you the most?

40550366

I really struggled to read Blood & Honey, which is so disappointing after how much I enjoyed Serpent & Dove. This book definitely suffers from middle-book syndrome. I felt like nothing happened and the characters annoyed me more than they should. The banter and tension of the first book was lost in this one. I will say that I do not put all the blame on Mahurin, as I know that this was supposed to be a duology but the publisher pushed it to become a series. I don’t think Mahurin was prepared to turn her story into three books!

What was your favourite cover?

52886627

Do I even have to explain this one! Look how vibrant that cover is!

What was your favourite summer release?

51824630

I knew that I was going to love The Pull of the Stars, as Emma Donoghue is one of my favourite authors. It is no surprise to me that this is my favourite summer release and has the potential to become my favourite book of the year. It is so heart wrenching and so beautiful!

What book did you plan on reading, but never got around to?

50160619. sx318 sy475

I will read You Should See Me in a Crown before the end of the year. It sounds like exactly the kind of YA contemporary that I love. I meant to prioritize it this summer, but you know how it is!

Which books do you plan on reading this fall?

There are so many books that I want to read this fall, but these three are definitely a priority. When No One is Watching and Mexican Gothic have been receiving a lot of buzz and will give me the perfect fall vibes. I am also determined to continue on with the Inspector Gamache series since I loved the first book so much.

What was the best book you read this summer? What genre did you read most? I would love to know!

  1. Ugh, it sucks when a book disappoints, but that’s the creative arts for you. It’s so subjective, and thankfully, it’s also full of many other bookish options 😀 Also, I’m glad I’m not the only one who also planned on reading You Should See Me In A Crown and still haven’t gotten around to it!

  2. I totally agree with your thoughts on Blood & Honey, it took me way longer to read it than I planned and I def think it suffered the sophomore slump. Hopefully the next book makes up for it, though! ♥
