Do you ever read a book and think to yourself that it would make an amazing TV series or movie? That happens to me quite a bit, and that is why I love this week’s TTT topic. I know that adaptations are often disappointing and do not hold a candle to the books, but in my dream world, these books would be adapted in a way that does them justice.
You Had Me at Hola by Alexis Daria
An adaptation of You Had Me at Hola would be such fun considering it is about actors and there are chapters within the book about the telenovela that they star in. I could see it becoming a very popular Netflix Original movie or even stretched out into a series. Each episode could center around an episode of the TV show in the book- I think it could be cleverly done!
The Switch by Beth O’Leary
The Switch is one of those books that is meant to be made into a movie! The adaptation would have a very similar vibe to The Holiday, which is a movie I adore. There is something so charming and wholesome about this story that I think would translate really well into a feel-good movie.
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas
I would not be surprised if there are already talks going on about adapting Cemetery Boys. Although the book does not come out until September, it is already receiving a lot of buzz and I know that it is going to be a HUGE success. Everything about this book is incredible- I could perfectly see the story playing out in my mind. There is so much potential for an amazing TV series here!
Let Me Hear a Rhyme by Tiffany D. Jackson
I think that Let Me Hear a Rhyme would be a fantastic movie. The fact that it is set in the 90s will bring a lot of nostalgia for many people, and the story itself is so gut-wrenching while also being very hopeful. The soundtrack for this movie would also be incredible! This is the movie we all need right now.
The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix
I know that The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires has been getting mixed reviews, but there is no denying that it would make for a compelling and dark TV series. It would be very much like Desperate Housewives but with vampires- enough said!
Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
I have read that the adaptation rights for Such a Fun Age have already been sold, but that does not necessarily mean that it will ever come to fruition. I really hope that we get an adaptation that does this book justice. This is a book that is compulsively readable while also touching on a lot of poignant issues- it is so nuanced, and I think a movie version could lead to some important conversations about race and performative allyship.
The Glittering Hour by Iona Grey
The way that The Glittering Hour is written leads to me believe that it would make for a stellar series. There are two timelines that eventually come together, so there is a lot of intrigue there. One timeline is set in the 1920s and is more about glitz and glamour, while the other timelines is set decades later and is much darker and heartbreaking. There is a great balance!
Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb
I know that Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is non-fiction, and it may not seem like an obvious choice for an adaptation, but I personally think there is a lot of potential for a great TV series. Each episode could focus on a different patient while also intersecting Gottlieb’s own sessions with her therapist. I picture something similar to Modern Love on Amazon Prime.
City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert
I have noticed that I want most of these books adapted into TV series rather than movies, but there are so many layers to these stories that could not be covered in the length of a movie. City of Girls spans many years, and it is both glamorous and gritty. It is the character growth that is truly amazing, and I think that would translate well in a series.
The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory
I think that the The Wedding Date series would make for an amazing movie franchise on Netflix. The storylines are simply yet adorable and would be lighthearted, feel-good movies that could be released yearly. I think many people would look forward to them every year!
