This is probably one of my favourite TTT topics. It’s nice to have an excuse to share books I loved but don’t talk about enough!
Lovely War by Julie Berry
Lovely War was one of the first books I read this year (though it feels like ages ago!), and it took me by complete surprise. I had no idea that there was a mythological element, but it added something special to the story. I loved hearing Aphrodite’s perspective, and I was attached to all the characters. This book made me realize how few WWI novels I have read. Have a box of tissues ready if you decide to pick this one up!
The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell
I cannot believe I didn’t review The Family Upstairs! I always say that it is my favourite mystery. There is a lot going on in this book and the way that all the storylines come together was ingenious! I love books about creepy houses and complicated families, and this book has both.
There There by Tommy Orange
I read There There exactly a year ago, and I still think about it often. I am drawn to books that follow numerous characters whose stories eventually intersect. This almost read like a series of short stories. Tommy Orange’s writing is fantastic and haunting, and I would love read more of his work.
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
Homegoing is the book that made me realize that I love multi-generational family sagas. I don’t often reread books, but I would love to pick this one up again. I have a countdown on my phone for the release of Gyasi’s next novel, Transcendent Kingdom.
The Wonder by Emma Donoghue
Emma Donoghue is one of my favourite authors, and The Wonder is the book that solidified that for me. It’s such a strange book, and not one I would recommend to everyone, but I thought there was something so unique and special about it.
The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
The Blood of Eden is my favourite vampire series. It always surprises me how little it is talked about! Jackal is the best villain and so sarcastic. I think I need to reread the books this October!
The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord
Now is the perfect time to read The Names They Gave Us, as it is set at a summer camp! There is so much to love about this book. It’s truly moving and more emotional than I was expecting. I was an absolute mess by the end. I need to read more by Emery Lord!
Swimming Lessons by Claire Fuller
Swimming Lessons is a quiet novel, and despite loving it so much, I have a hard time reviewing it. It’s simply incredible! This is another story about complicated families and long kept secrets. There is a mystery that runs throughout the entire novel, but it is the relationships between the character that is truly interesting.
The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker
I read The Dreamers at the beginning of 2019, and I’m not sure that it is one I would recommend now given the current pandemic, but it was really interesting. It is more character driven than one would initially expect, and seeing how they each deal with the pandemic in different ways was compelling.
Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand
I am not someone who reads a lot of horror, but Sawkill Girls was special. It was the perfect level of scary for me, and it had characters that I was able to root for. It was unlike anything I have ever read before!
As hard as I try, there will always be books I love that I won’t have a chance to review. It has been great to have a chance to highlight a few of them here!

My daughter LOVES Immortal Rules. She talks about Jackal all the time too. I haven’t read that series though. Maybe I’ll have to give it a try.

Great TTT! I’m currently reading Julie Kagawa’s book The Fox of the Shadows and I’m totally enamored by the setting and story she managed to weave out of Japanese folklore. Lovely War is also on the top of my list, and I love the concept behind the book.

A lot of these are on my TBR 🙂 it can definitely be difficult to review books, especially when they’re so amazing that you just don’t have the words for it

Sawkill Girls is one of my all time favorites ❤️❤️ If you do decided to reread Homegoing, I highly recommend the audiobook. The narrator was so good I thought there were different narrators for each perspective – there’s not 😅

I loved Homegoing and The Wonder, and There There was very good. I actually didn’t love The Dreamers, but I know a lot of people did.
The Dreamers gets a lot of mixed reviews, and I totally understand why!
I hear such incredible things about Kagawa’s vampire series, but you’re right, not very often. I need to look into this series sooner than later it would appear. I also need to read a lot of the books you featured because they’ve been on my TBR too long lol.

Great list! I know there are plenty of books I’ve loved but didn’t review, either because I wasn’t do many reviews at that time or because even though I loved the book, I was finding it hard to express why. I’m happy to see There There on your list — it’s high on my to-read stack. 🙂
