First Impression Friday– The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

First Impression Friday is hosted by J.W. Martin.

First Impression Friday will be a meme where you talk about a book that you JUST STARTED! Maybe you’re only a chapter or two in, maybe a little farther.

Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions and predict what you’ll think by the end.

This is the way the world ends. Again.

Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. Meanwhile, mighty Sanze — the world-spanning empire whose innovations have been civilization’s bedrock for a thousand years — collapses as most of its citizens are murdered to serve a madman’s vengeance. And worst of all, across the heart of the vast continent known as the Stillness, a great red rift has been been torn into the heart of the earth, spewing ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries.

Now Essun must pursue the wreckage of her family through a deadly, dying land. Without sunlight, clean water, or arable land, and with limited stockpiles of supplies, there will be war all across the Stillness: a battle royale of nations not for power or territory, but simply for the basic resources necessary to get through the long dark night. Essun does not care if the world falls apart around her. She’ll break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.

Let’s start with the end of the world, why don’t we?

As soon as I read N.K. Jemisin’s dedication, I knew that I was going to love her writing style. The map also sold me on this world! So far, I have read only the prologue and a couple chapters, but I am definitely intrigued. Someone gave me some very helpful advice and suggested that I read the glossary at the back first. I feel like doing that has given me a better grasp of the world and I am started to feel like I have a better understanding of it.

I have a feeling that it is going to take me some time to get through this trilogy, and that is what I appreciate about it. When I read fantasy, I want it to be descriptive and elaborate. I want to know everything about the world and the characters. I want this fantasy world to somehow shine a light on the realities of our world. I think I am going to find that in the Broken Earth trilogy.

I recently watched Adri’s @ Perpetual Pages’ spoiler-free review that they posted in 2016. The discussion that she is having around the book is still extremely relevant four years later. It is definitely worth watching whether or not you plan to read The Fifth Season. Also, just check out their entire channel. Adri has become one of my favourite Booktubers!

  1. Look. If there wasn’t a pandemic going on I would be banging on TNT’s door. They promised me a series for this book and it still isn’t here. AND I WANT TO KNOW WHY. It should have been here a year(s) ago. Great choice!

  2. I’ve heard so many great things about this series and Jemisin’s writing. Glad to hear it has an immediately likable writing style! Definitely going to check out Adri’s channel too, I’ve been looking for more booktubers to follow so that’s always helpful.

  3. This has been on my radar for a few weeks now because it seems like EVERYONE is talking about!! I’ve heard good things before, but more so now than ever. I am excited to dive into it (hopefully soon), and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts afterward! Hope you enjoy it 🙂

  4. That’s definitely the kind of first line that draws a reader in! 🙂 I just recently bought this book but haven’t started it yet, so it’s really good to know it is interesting and draws you in from the beginning. Hope you continue to enjoy it! 😀
