My Current Reads

I have talked about this all month long, but I have been in a bit of a reading and a blogging slump lately. I don’t know if it is because of what is going on in the world or because I have started editing full time, or if it is a combination of both. I spend most of my day reading at this computer, so it can be difficult to motivate myself to read or blog, but this is my happy place! This blog has afforded me the opportunity to pursue a career that I love, and I never want to walk away from it. That said, I think that the break has been good for me, and I can tell that I have started to get back into the groove.

I thought it would be fun to talk about all of the books that I am currently reading- there are many! I have picked up and put down a lot of books in May, but I hope to get through them all in June.

Lullabies for Little Criminals by Heather O’Neill

I think I started reading Lullabies for Little Criminals back in March… This is 100% an issue of timing. This book is beautiful written but utterly heartbreaking. I have not be in the right frame of mind for this book, but I know that when I am it is going to end up being a favourite. I can already feel myself becoming completely attached to Baby, the main character. There is something so innocent about her despite how much she has gone through and seen at such a young age. Heather O’Neill wrote my favourite book, The Lonely Hearts Hotel, and I cannot wait to make my way through her backlist- I also have The Girl Who Was Saturday Night sitting on my shelves.

The Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

I have The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes to thank for pulling me out of my reading slump. There is something about this world and Suzanne Collins’ writing that is so compulsively readable. But, can we talk about the name!? Is anyone else over the fact that every book seems to be titled The Blank or Blank and Blank. These books deserve better! Anyway, I also am not sure that we needed a book about President Snow’s backstory, but I am having fun with it and curious to see where it goes. I will definitely have a full review soon! I also see a Hunger Games reread/rewatch in my future.

Hollywood Park by Mikel Jollett

I had never heard of the Church of Synanon before picking up Hollywood Park, but I have since fallen down a serious rabbit hole of researching everything there is to know about the cult- it has actually taken away from my reading time! I am not very far into this memoir, but it is compelling so far. I did not know what to expect going into it, but Jollett is a very talented writer and he has an interesting story to tell. I am always in awe of people who are willing and able to share their stories in such a raw way.

The Night Stalker by Philip Carlo

Whenever I find myself in a reading slump, I know that I can turn to true crime. There is something about the genre that is captivating, especially if I am listening to the audiobook. I think it is because the experience is almost like listening to a podcast. I have her of The Night Stalker, but I know nothing about his crimes or his victims. I am a few chapters into this book and it is chilling. Carlo has done a great job of setting the scene and describing all of the players. There is something about the way that it is written that reminds me of In Cold Blood, which is my favourite true crime book.

  1. Isnt Suzanna Collins the author of the Hunger Game series? I didnt think those books would strike my interest BUT OMG I Loved them. I am going to check out this new one. Thanks for sparking my interst😊

  2. I read the first Hunger Games book years ago and loved it, however I dnf’d the second, and I really didn’t like the first film so I never continued the series in either format. However I rewatched and finished all the films recently and ended up really enjoying them, and now what with the hype of the prequel coming out I might give the books a second shot!! Also currently reading An Ember in the Ashes😊

  4. I so can’t wait to read THG prequel!! I’m in a slump atm too but I’m hoping to start reading again in the next couple of days – probably with Treason Of Thorns (that’s what I’m leaning towards anyway, limiting myself to my library options until I’ve read them all).

  5. I just started TBOSAS and I’m intrigued by it so far, but I don’t have any concrete feelings yet! I am definitely interested to see where the story goes! Hope you end up enjoying all of these reads 🙂

  6. We’ve all had our days when we are just tired after a long day of work and cannot manage to read or blog much! Hope you get back into the swing of things <3 I have been seeing all the hype with the new Hunger Games book, and I really need to get my hands on it!

  7. I just got a copy of The Ballad of… (wow, that’s a long title!), and can’t wait to start, although I think it’s behind one or two ARCs that I already committed to.
