Favourite Book(s) of the Month: Conversations with Friends, Be Not Far From Me, Hum If You Don’t Know the Words
Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore
Time Travel can be hit or miss for me because it can be difficult for the trope to feel original. Thankfully, Oona Out of Order completely took me by surprise and was much more than I expected. It was compelling to see how the time travelling affected Oona and to see her character growth as the story went on. So good!
All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace
Hmmm… I do not have a lot to say about this one. It is so forgettable that I can’t even remember why I disliked it. I think it just fell into a lot of tropes and it didn’t do anything interesting. I thought the world was interesting but the characters fell flat and I was not invested in them.
Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney
This solidified Sally Rooney as one of my favourite authors. I can see why it does not work for some people as the characters are unlikeable and snobby, but I found myself rooting for them anyway. I thought it was an interesting snapshot into the lives of these characters and I enjoyed seeing the world from their perspectives because they are quite different than my own!
Be Not Far From Me by Mindy McGinnis
Mindy McGinnis never disappoints! And I do not normally enjoy survival stories! This book had be captivated from the first page and I could not put it down. I adored our main character and learning about her history and how it has prepared her to survive. Living inside her head during her ordeal messed with me!
The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker
I hate that I have mixed feelings about The Simple Wild because I wanted to love it as much as everyone else did. I just could not get passed how cruel the main character and the love interest were to each other in the beginning. I did appreciate some of the character development and Calla’s relationship with her father. I need to read more books set in Alaska!
The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel
The Glass Hotel is unlike anything else I have ever read. I do not even know where to start or how to describe this book. What stands out to me most is Mandel’s writing. She is able to weave quite a complicated story in a way that feels seamless and allows the reader to follow along. I was truly engrossed in this story and I don’t know why!
Hum If You Don’t Know the Words by Bianca Marais
Wow. Bianca Marais has the potential to become one of my favourite authors. I was lucky enough to participated in a group chat with her where she talked more about her novel and the backstory. It made me appreciate it all the more. You can tell that she put a lot of heart and research in this story and wanted to do it in an honest and respectful way. She certainly pulled it off!
Final Girls by Riley Sager
Okay I get the Riley Sager hype! It has been a long time since I was so engrossed in a thriller. So much of it made me uncomfortable and I constantly questioned the main character’s decisions, but that is sort of the genius of it. There was some predictability to it but it kept me on my toes that is for sure!
Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne
I can’t believe it took me this long to read Winnie the Pooh. I always had a soft spot for this characters and reading this gave me so much nostalgia. It was adorable, what else can I say!?
Obviously March was a strange month for all of us. I read the same number of books this month as I did in February, even though I had more time on my hands. It has been difficult to concentrate on reading, but it has been getting better.
What was the best book you read in March? How are you holding up?
Love this! I am hoping to get to Sally Rooney’s novels soon! My favourite book that I read in March was probably A Harlot’s Progress by David Dabydeen, not necessarily a fun read but a very interesting narrative style with some really important ideas explored as well.
That sounds like an interesting read. Will have to look into it! Sally Rooney is incredible!
oh I had ALOT to say about All the Tropes… sorry All the Stars and Teeth… I went so salty on it… you could have made a salt lick out of my review…. but I’m just thrilled to see someone else agree!

That book hit the best seller list on all hype. And I was SALTY. I stood at my shift at barnes and noble and glared at that book. GLARED. I told my assistant manager it was going to drop like a rock. And when it did… she was like… wow. Lol. I dont normally say yes.. please go read my review… but this level of salt is up there with my review of verify… so yes… yes… please… lol
Hahah your saltiness for the book is giving me life right now!! I have been avoiding Verity because my gut is telling me I will hate it!

Good reading month!! I hated the main character in The Simple Wild so I was very disappointed, but I’m trying to find more books set in Alaska! (Have you read The Great Alone? Now THAT is a good book!)

Her books seem to get a lot of mixed reviews but I love them!
Amazing reading 9 books! I really liked The Simple Wild, but I read the sequel in March and it wasn’t that great as The Simple Wild was. I felt like I couldn’t really stand Calla anymore once it got to that book.
Oh no that does not bode well for me with the sequel!
