I have always enjoyed reading book quotes, so I decided that for 2019 I will share my favourite quotes for every five books that I read! These are quotes that stood out to me, but will in no way spoil the book for you. I hope they give you a sense of what the book is about and the writing style!
In Five Years by Rebecca Searle
“Happiness. The enemy of all suffering.”
“You mistake love. You think it has to have a future in order to matter, but it doesn’t. It’s the only thing that does not need to become at all. It matters only insofar as it exists. Here. Now. Love doesn’t require a future.”
The Girl Who Smiled Beads by Clemantine Wamariya
“I’ve seen enough to know that you can be a human with a mountain of resources and you can be a human with nothing, and you can be a monster either way.”
“In my version of the story, the girl walks the earth and she is always safe, undeniably strong and brave – a dream, a superstar, a goddess of sorts. I needed to believe those things were possible and that they might be true about me too.”
“Nobody is who you think they are at first glance. We need to see beyond the projections we cast onto each other. Each of us is so much grander, more nuanced, and more extraordinary than anybody thinks, including ourselves.”
Just Mercy by Brian Stevenson
“Each of us is more than the worst thing we’ve ever done.”
“The true measure of our character is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned.”
“But simply punishing the broken–walking away from them or hiding them from sight–only ensures that they remain broken and we do, too. There is no wholeness outside of our reciprocal humanity.”
Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore
“There would be bad days, there always would. But she’d collect these good days, each one illuminated, and string them together until they glowed brightly in her memory like Christmas lights in a mirrored room.”
“All good things end, always. The trick is to enjoy them while they last.”
“And still the sorrow threatened at the edges like a tidal wave on the horizon.”
Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney
“I realised my life would be full of mundane physical suffering, and that there was nothing special about it. Suffering wouldn’t make me special, and pretending not to suffer wouldn’t make me special. Talking about it, or even writing about it, would not transform the suffering into something useful.”
“You underestimate your own power so you don’t have to blame yourself for treating other people badly.”
“Everyone’s always going through something, aren’t they? That’s life, basically. It’s just more and more things to go through.”
Have you read any of these books? I would love to know if any of the quotes resonated with you!
