First Impression Friday is hosted by J.W. Martin.
First Impression Friday will be a meme where you talk about a book that you JUST STARTED! Maybe you’re only a chapter or two in, maybe a little farther.
Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions and predict what you’ll think by the end.

Alix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living showing other women how to do the same. A mother to two small girls, she started out as a blogger and has quickly built herself into a confidence-driven brand. So she is shocked when her babysitter, Emira Tucker, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains’ toddler one night. Seeing a young black woman out late with a white child, a security guard at their local high-end supermarket accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make it right.
But Emira herself is aimless, broke, and wary of Alix’s desire to help. At twenty-five, she is about to lose her health insurance and has no idea what to do with her life. When the video of Emira unearths someone from Alix’s past, both women find themselves on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know about themselves, and each other.
With empathy and piercing social commentary, Such a Fun Age explores the stickiness of transactional relationships, what it means to make someone “family,” the complicated reality of being a grown up, and the consequences of doing the right thing for the wrong reason.
Such a Fun Age has been absolutely everywhere. It is January’s pick for Reese Witherspoon book club, and it is definitely a Bookstagram favourite.
I am only a few chapters in but I am confident that the hype is well-deserved. I was captivated right from the start. There is something about the way that it is written that makes it so readable and has me so invested. I am shocked that this is a debut novel!
It is clear that this is going to be a character-driven novel, which you know I love. I also think it is going to have a lot of great social commentary.
Another thing I am appreciating so far is the dialogue. There is a lot of it, and I sometimes feel like that can make a story feel like it doesn’t have a lot of depth or the dialogue doesn’t feel natural. Not the case in Such a Fun Age so far!
You know that feeling when you are reading a book that has the potential to become an all time favourite!? That is what is happening for me at the minute.
