Let me start off by saying that I am usually not a poetry reader. I do not even know what compelled me to give this collection a chance, but I am thrilled that I did. It has opened my eyes to the fact that there is modern poetry out there that I can connect with.
There was something so unique about this collection and I love that the author included her illustrations and art work. She is incredibly talented and I think she has a lot of important things to say. I am confident that a lot of readers will feel heard by Mateer’s poetry and I found them to be extremely accessible.
The passages from Aphrodite’s perspective were particularly compelling and there were many that I have saved and shared with friends. It made me look at women in mythology in a new way. This seems to be a common trend in fiction lately and I have been loving it.
Mateer’s poetry touches on feminism, mental health, assault, and the unfairness of having our stories rewritten for us.
Yes! Even if you are not normally a fan of modern day poetry, please give Aphrodite Made Me Do It a chance. I took a lot away from it and it is a collection that I will return to from time to time.
