Aphrodite Made Me Do It by Trista Mateer

Bestselling and award-winning author Trista Mateer takes an imaginative approach to self-care in this new poetry and prose collection, Aphrodite Made Me Do It. In this empowering retelling, she uses the mythology of the goddess to weave a common thread through the past and present. By the end of this book, Aphrodite make you believe in the possibility of your own healing.

Let me start off by saying that I am usually not a poetry reader. I do not even know what compelled me to give this collection a chance, but I am thrilled that I did. It has opened my eyes to the fact that there is modern poetry out there that I can connect with.
There was something so unique about this collection and I love that the author included her illustrations and art work. She is incredibly talented and I think she has a lot of important things to say. I am confident that a lot of readers will feel heard by Mateer’s poetry and I found them to be extremely accessible.
The passages from Aphrodite’s perspective were particularly compelling and there were many that I have saved and shared with friends. It made me look at women in mythology in a new way. This seems to be a common trend in fiction lately and I have been loving it.
Mateer’s poetry touches on feminism, mental health, assault, and the unfairness of having our stories rewritten for us.

Yes! Even if you are not normally a fan of modern day poetry, please give Aphrodite Made Me Do It a chance. I took a lot away from it and it is a collection that I will return to from time to time.

great review! i don’t read poetry but this looks nice.
It is great if poetry is out of your comfort zone!
Glad to see you enjoyed it! I have this on my list as well!
It was wonderful!
It’s been a while since I read any poetry but this collection sounds beautiful! And that cover though 😍
The cover is so awesome isn’t it?!
Great review! I’ve seen this one around but have been on the fence because I hardly ever read poetry. You’ve made it sound very appealing!
Thank you! It feels like so much more than poetry. Unlike anything I have read!
Poetry isn’t my thing but since it has a Greek goddess in the title, I might have to give it a try. My mythology obsession compels me to do so LOL. Great review! Happy that you enjoyed this one!
It’s not my thing either, but this collection was incredible! The parts told by Aphrodite will not disappoint.
