First Impression Friday- Lovely War

First Impression Friday is hosted by J.W. Martin.

First Impression Friday will be a meme where you talk about a book that you JUST STARTED! Maybe you’re only a chapter or two in, maybe a little farther.

Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions and predict what you’ll think by the end.

Lovely War by Julie Berry

A sweeping, multi-layered romance with a divine twist, by the Printz Honor-winning author of The Passion of Dolssa, set in the perilous days of World Wars I and II.

It’s 1917, and World War I is at its zenith when Hazel and James first catch sight of each other at a London party. She’s a shy and talented pianist; he’s a newly minted soldier with dreams of becoming an architect. When they fall in love, it’s immediate and deep—and cut short when James is shipped off to the killing fields.

Aubrey Edwards is also headed toward the trenches. A gifted musician who’s played Carnegie Hall, he’s a member of the 15th New York Infantry, an all-African-American regiment being sent to Europe to help end the Great War. Love is the last thing on his mind. But that’s before he meets Colette Fournier, a Belgian chanteuse who’s already survived unspeakable tragedy at the hands of the Germans.

Thirty years after these four lovers’ fates collide, the Greek goddess Aphrodite tells their stories to her husband, Hephaestus, and her lover, Ares, in a luxe Manhattan hotel room at the height of World War II. She seeks to answer the age-old question: Why are Love and War eternally drawn to one another? But her quest for a conclusion that will satisfy her jealous husband uncovers a multi-threaded tale of prejudice, trauma, and music and reveals that War is no match for the power of Love.

I have seen this book everywhere but it somehow escaped me that there were elements of Greek mythology. I am loving that part of the story and it is making Lovely War stand out among the other war novels I have read. It is funny because the first book I read thing year (which I will post a review for on Sunday) was about Aphrodite. Apparently 2020 is going to be a year of Greek myths and I am not complaining!

I am reading Lovely War for a buddy read on Instagram, so I am being forced to read it in shorter chunks. Otherwise I would have binged this book already- it is that good. I love that there are different narrators from Aphrodite to Apollo and that we are hearing about real, mortal love stories as well as about the conflicts between the gods. I am already so invested in the romance between James and Hazel and it is has only just begun.

I have no idea where this story is going, but I get the impression that it is going to break my heart. I would be surprise if I ended up rating Lovely War anything less than four stars.

  1. I’m surprised that I haven’t seen this book anywhere until the other day when someone mentioned it as their favorite underrated book of 2019. It sounds really interesting and I’m now going to check it out. Hope you continue to enjoy the rest of the book 🙂
