More Fall Book Recommendations

A few weeks ago the topic for Top Five Tuesday was “Top Five Fall Recommendations”. While searching for books for that post, I came across many more books I have read and loved that I thought would be perfect for this time of year. I decided that I just had to talk about them so here you go!

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A Craig

I know I have been talking about this book a lot lately but it is because House of Salt and Sorrow took me by complete surprise. I did not know what to expect but it was way creepier and darker than I could have ever imagine, especially when you consider it is YA. Everything from the setting to the characters work together to create a unique retelling that will haunt you.

Melmoth by Sarah Perry

Sarah Perry has quickly become one of my favourite authors. Her writing is so lush and descriptive. She has a special way of bring her world and characters to life. There is so much I love about her story telling and both of her books, The Essex Serpent and Melmoth, make for ideal Fall reads- they are atmospheric with an element of mystery. The ending of Melmoth gave me chills- brilliant!

Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu

If you are a fan of graphic novels you need to check out Mooncakes! It put me in such a cozy Fall mood and brought a smile to my face. The art is adorable to match. I loved the friendship/relationship between these two characters- one who is a witch and the other a werewolf. I can not wait for the next volume!

The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware

Thriller obviously make perfect Fall reads and The Death of Mrs. Westaway is the best one I have read in awhile. Ruth Ware is such a talent author and she is a genius at creating atmosphere. I love that she took the classic haunting house trope and added a twist to it- she did the same in her latest novel, The Turn of the Key.

Lanny by Max Porter

Lanny is arguably the most unique novel I have ever read. Experimental novels can be hit or miss for me but this one was a huge hit. This book is impossible to explain so I will leave you with a quote from the synopsis that I find chilling:

“Dead Papa Toothwort is awake. He is listening to this twenty-first-century village, to his English symphony. He is listening, intently, for a mischievous, enchanting boy whose parents have recently made the village their home. Lanny.”

Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh

I am not a huge fantasy lover, but when I am in the mood to pick one up it is always during the Fall. Silver in the Wood is one of my favourite fantasy novels and I think the fact that it is set in the woods adds to the Fall vibe. It is spooky but it is also surprisingly charming. I would love to reread it before the year is over!

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

Any book set on a college campus screams Fall to me, but none quite like The Secret History- it is so dark and twisted. The characters are all deplorable but I found myself so invested in their story. It’s a book that I think about often!

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

My Sister, the Serial Killer is unlike any other thriller I have ever read. It is more character driven and slow. I thought the moral questions that it brought up to be fascinating. How far would you go to protect your family?

The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker

I love SciFi and post-apocalyptic books this time of year and The Dreamers is a recent favourite. It was frightening because it is noya stretch that this could be our possible future. The story follows many different characters in different situations and it was compelling.

Bitter Orange by Claire Fuller

Bitter Orange is set in the dead of summer but something about it makes me think it is a perfect Fall read. There is a heaviness to it- you are unsettled the entire time you are reading it. There were some brilliant twists and turns.

Recursion by Blake Crouch

All of Blake Crouch’s novels are perfect for Fall, but his most recent novel is my favourite. I loved the plot but it was the characters who shined in my mind- they had many layers. This is one of those books that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
