Five 2019 Book Covers I Love

I am such a sucker for a gorgeous book cover! I am actually taking a course right now called The Introduction to Book Design. Coincidentally, our discussion topic this week is to share the most beautiful book cover we have come across lately. Could the timing for this week’s Top Five Tuesday be any better? Another discussion question is to share the ugliest cover we have come across lately… and I am struggling with that one! Any suggestions?

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

With the Fire on High is by far my favourite cover of the year. It is so beautiful and I love everything about it. The illustration of Emoni is stunning and really brings her to life. I am loving the trend of having illustrations of the characters on the cover. The fruit that surrounds her is also a nice touch. The burgundy colour of the cover is also unique! And let me tell you, the story inside is just as, if not more, gorgeous!

Wilder Girls by Rory Powers

There is something so striking and haunting about the cover of Wilder Girls. It really makes you wonder what is going on in this story. It is a shame that I have heard so many mixed things about the story itself, but this cover alone tempts me to still give it a chance!

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

The cover for The Unhoneymooners captures the vibe of the story so well! This is by far the best of the Christina Lauren book covers. One of my favourite things about this novel was the setting, which this cover certainly reflects. I need to read more books set in Hawaii! I have also come to the conclusion that I am a sucker for a bright yellow cover.

Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield

The more I look at the cover of Once Upon a River, the more I appreciate it. This is the book that I plan to read next and the cover itself intrigues me. How does the swan come in to play? I love that the neck of the swan is made to look like a river and that the title flows in the way that it does. I love the covers of all of Diane Setterfield’s novels- The Thirteenth Tale being one of my all time favourites!

Let Me Hear a Rhyme by Tiffany D. Jackson

Is there a more fun cover than this one?! I knew I wanted to read Let Me Hear a Rhyme as soon as I saw it! I need to make it a priority because I have only heard amazing things. What I love most about this cover is that it has a total 80s vibe. There is a lot going on but it just works. This might be my favourite typography ever- it really tells you something about the story inside!

I would love to know what you think of these covers and what is your favourite cover on the year!

  1. I am obsessed with the cover of With the Fire on High and I can only hope that I love the story just as much when I finally read it!😍

  2. Let’s be fair … who ISN’T a sucker for a good book cover? I’ve honestly bought books SOLELY because of the cover … thank gosh most of them were good ha-ha!

I can’t wait to read “With the Fire on High” … I bought it and it’s so beautiful! I want to make sure I will like “Wilder Girls” and “Once Upon a River” before I buy it. I think they’re stories I will enjoy based on reviews I’ve seen.

    Great post!

  3. These are all such gorgeous covers! I love the trend of characters on covers too 🙂 Graphic design is so cool and the artists are so talented. I’m happy this topic went along with your class

  4. I love the cover for my latest read, Midnight at the Wandering Vineyard by Jamie Raintree, It also always makes me want a glass of wine! haha

  6. With the Fire on High is an incredible cover, and so aesthetically pleasing!
I also added Wilder Girls to my list, because the art style is so beautiful and I’m so in love with it💕.

  7. These are all beautiful choices. I love the colours of With The Fire On High and Wilder Girls is just so stunning yet haunting. I can totally see what you mean about how well the swan doubles as a river too, it’s so clever.

As for bad covers what always comes to mind for me is The Graces by Laure Eve. The American cover is gorgeous and the original UK one was fine but the newest is just… amateurish tbh. Idk it just really bothers me when the US cover is so pretty and the UK one is literally just the title /:

    1. Stunning and haunting is the perfect way to describe the cover of Wilder Girls.

I can totally see what you mean about the new UK cover for The Graces. I am always fascinated by the differences between US and UK covers. It is strange in Canada because we never know which one we are going to get!

      1. I really don’t know why they changed that one. But yes I always find seeing the differences fascinating too and love looking at all the different covers that are around. I didn’t realize that you got a mixture of the two in Canada though.
