First Impression Friday is hosted by J.W. Martin.
First Impression Friday will be a meme where you talk about a book that you JUST STARTED! Maybe you’re only a chapter or two in, maybe a little farther.
Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions and predict what you’ll think by the end.
City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert
City of Girls seems to be the book of the summer, and from what I can tell having read just about 200 pages, it is for good reason! There is so much about this one that I am enjoying so far- it is glamorous but also seedy, and light-hearted while also having some depth. Elizabeth Gilbert has managed to write quite the page-turner!
If you are like me and the fact that you didn’t enjoy Eat, Pray, Love is putting you off from picking up Gilbert’s latest work, I think you are missing out. So far, it has exceeded by expectations.
The only thing that I have to get my head around is the fact that this novel, which is over 400 pages, it supposedly a letter that our main character is writing to a women named Angela. Who writes a 400 page letter?? I understand why the author chose to tell the story in this way but it does requite you to suspend your disbelief and just go with it.
There is something about City of Girls that is giving me The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo vibes, and I am hear for it! I can not wait to see where the story goes and I think it good easily end up being a five star read. The perfect book to have picked up after having read some pretty heavy and dark novels lately.
Have you read City of Girls or any of Elizabeth Gilbert’s other fiction? I would love to know if they are worth reading!
I have been planning to start this book for weeks and I’m really excited about it, but I’ve yet to crack the spine! Glad to hear it’s a page turner!
It’s really great! It’s a quicker read than the size of it would lead you to believe!
I think that’s what has made be drag my feet a bit- the size is a little daunting, and I feel like I can’t get behind in my reading or I’ll be short on reviews. #bloggerscurse
I definitely relate to that!
400 page letter?! Haha heck no I wouldn’t even want to write that to my lover lol. But I do keep hearing about this so I hope that you end up loving it in the end!
I know! It’s taken some time to wrap my head around but I think I’m going to end up loving it!
I downloaded this on audiobook this morning!!! Can’t wait to start it!!!
It’s so good. I bet it’s fantastic on audio!
Haven’t managed to listen to it yet, hopefully tomorrow!!
Is it like a diary set up or is it very clearly all one lefter? I love books that are the diary set up personally.
Lol I’m one of those people- I keep seeing this book in all the bookstore windows, but then I think about Eat,Pray, Love and turn around and leave
Exactly!! I felt the same way!
I’m glad I’m not the only one. Maybe I’ll give it a go when I can get it from the library
You’re right…Eat, Live, Pray caused me to discount this without giving it a fair chance.
That was my initial instinct as well. But then everyone kept talking about it so I was curious. So glad I am giving it a chance!
*gasp!* did not like Eat, Pray, Love??
It’s always surprising to me when people say that. I was in such a bubble when I read that book that I didn’t realize many people did not like it at all. Then again, I discovered the book late (after the movie came out) and wasn’t paying attention to book news so I wouldn’t have know. I just assumed everyone loved it like me. Lol!
Glad to hear that City of Girls is good.
Hahaha it seems to be a love it or hate it kind of book!
I’ve never done a first impressions before, this seems a lot of fun, I might do it for the next book I start!
I would love to see a first Impression of your next read. I think it’s interesting!
It’s all one letter. Would have been interesting as a diary though!
*sorry for the late response. You’re comment ended up in my spam somehow!
I haven’t read Eat, Pray, Love but I did try watching the film and gave up so I was kind of sceptical about this book. It’s s relief to know that someone who wasn’t a fan of that book is enjoying this one so much though so maybe I’ll check it out sometime.
I couldn’t get through the movie either. I ended up loving this book and highly recommend it!
