(The) Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
Colson Whitehead is an autobuy for me! The Underground Railroad was beyond gut-wrenching and brilliant. It is the book that made me realize that I enjoy speculative fiction and renewed my love for historical fiction. It is one of those books that deserves all of the hype that it has received. Everyone should read it!
Victoria by Daisy Goodwin
Victoria is a book that I read before I started blogging and I forgot how much I enjoyed it! This is one of those books that I should talk about more often. I love historical fiction that has to do with royalty in some way. I was not expecting to form such a connection for Queen Victoria- at the end of the day she is just a normal teenager. I loved that she had all of this power but was still naive and dreamlike.
Women Talking by Miriam Toews
I will find any excuse I can get to talk about this gem of a novel. Miriam Toews has quickly become one of my favourite authors and it all started with Women Talking. She gives a voice to the voiceless in this powerful book and it is heartbreaking to know that it is based on a true story.

You Bring the Distant Near by Mitali Perkins
You Bring the Distant Near is such an underrated YA novel. It shocks me that it has under 700 reviews on Goodreads and I think it is a book that a lot of people would love if they gave it a chance. I adore stories that are told over multiple generations and this is a book that does it so well.
(The) Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman
I have to admit that I would not recommend this book. It is nonfiction about a Polish couple who ran a zoo during WWII. Their story is interesting but the way the author chose to tell it was quite tedious. It is obvious that Diane Ackerman is a naturalist and the story was dragged down by facts.
We have come to the end of the alphabet! I came so close to finding a book for every letter but X truly stumped me. I can not wait to see if anyone has a book for X!

The Underground Railroad sounds so good! I haven’t read much speculative fiction, but I’ve loved what I have read. Great list!

The Underground Railroad and You Bring The Distant Near are two books that every time I see I swear I want to read them, but never seem to do so. Your arguments for both definitely push them higher up my list though!! Great selections for a tough section of the alphabet!

I love everything about this list. The Underground Railroad was a profound reading experience, I just started The Nickel Boys and it’s even more heart-wrenching, I think I prefer the speculative spin Whitehead achieved in Railroad. Victoria sounds lovely and ooh, Women Talking is on my short list, good to know it lives up to the buzz.
I can’t wait to see your final thoughts on The Nickel Boys. I thought it was brilliant but definitely heart-wrenching.
