The Reading Rush TBR!

I am absolutely horrible at readathons but I have caved and decided to give The Reading Rush a try this year! I have a feeling that if I didn’t at least attempt it I would have major FOMO. Add me as a friend on The Reading Rush website and maybe we can encourage each other!

Read a book with purple on the cover.

Rough Magic: Riding the World’s Loneliest Horse Race

I listened to the first twenty minutes of this book on audiobook and it caught my attention right away. When I noticed that there was purple on the cover I decided to save it for the readathon. It is a memoir about a young woman participating in a 1000km horse race in Mongolia. I have heard great things about it!

Read a book in the same spot the entire time.

The Water Dance by Ta-Nehisi Coates

43982054

I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of The Water Dancer. It is relatively short at 256 pages. I will be at the beach during the week of the readathon so I plan on reading this one in its entirety with my feet in the sand! It is sounds like it is going to be a heartbreaking read so I will make sure to wear sunglasses to hide my tears in public.

Read a book you meant to read last year.

Exit West by Mohsin Hamid

Exit West is a book that I have been meaning to read since it was published in 2017. I have heard wonderful things about it and I love that there is an element of magical realism. Another great bonus is that the cover is purple and it is rather short (231 pages!). That means that this book can work for three prompts if need be. For that reason, I will probably read Exit West first and go from there.

Read an author’s first book.

There There by Tommy Orange

36692478

I have only heard incredible things about Tommy Orange’s debut novel, There There. It was on a lot of “Favourite Books of 2018” lists. I can not wait to experience it for myself! I honestly can not believe that it has taken me this long to get to it because I have a feeling I will love it.

Read a book with a non-human main character.

Artificial Condition (The Murderbot Diaries #2) by Martha Wells

36223860. sy475

I thought I would struggle to come up with a book for this challenge but then I remembered Murderbot! This series follows an AI and the adventures that he gets himself in to despite the fact that all he wants to do is watch television. I have been meaning to continue on with the series and I am so happy that The Reading Rush has given me an excuse to pick it up.

Pick a book that has five or more words in the title.

This is How it Always Is by Laurie Frankel

34275215. sy475

This is How it Always Is sounds so amazing! All of the friends on Goodreads who have read it have absolutely loved it. I usually get along with Reese Witherspoon’s book club picks (though I will never forgive her for The Light We Lost!) and have faith that this one will be a winner for me.

Read and watch a book to movie adaptation.

The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje

822952. sy475

The English Patient is one of my mom’s favourite movies so I told her that I would read the book so that I could watch the movie with her. I have been meaning to read something by Michael Ondaatje as he is a Canadian author and I am trying to read more books written by Canadians. I have no idea what this book is about but I am looking forward to it!

hhgfhfghfghgf

I tried to pick books that are on the shorter side so the total page counts comes to 1,889, which is a lot but I feel is doable. I plan to listen to a couple of them on audiobook as well. I will also be spending a lot of time on the beach during the readathon so theoretically I will have more time to read, but I do have to balance it with spending time with my family. I will just have to go with the flow and see what happens- not putting any pressure on myself!

  1. Your tbr looks so good!! There there looks like something I would really like… I’ll have to check it out! I’m so excited for this readathon 🙂

  2. You have some good choices! I’ve never done a readathon because I figure I wouldn’t be able to sit there long enough to make much progress

  3. Okay, so… FYI. The English Patient is my all-time favorite novel, mostly because the writing is so poetic and lyrical. I know, some people didn’t like it because you have to look behind his language to catch his story line, but that’s exactly what I love about his writing. On the other hand, the movie adaptation is HORRID. I totally hated that they put something into the movie as practically the central part of the story, which in the book, is just a way to move the rest of the story forward. Hated it, hated it, hated it. Sorry!

  4. I hope you will get to all of them, and enjoy of course!
I’m so sad that I won’t be able to participate this year 🙁

  5. Exit West is wonderful, I hope you enjoy it! The Water Dance also looks brilliant. I’ve read some of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ non-fiction work and he’s a fantastic writer so I’m sure his fiction will be just as good. Good luck with the Reading Rush!

  6. “an AI and the adventures that he gets himself in to despite the fact that all he wants to do is watch television” never resonated so hard w/ a book description but here we are b/c SAME

  7. Added you on the Reading Rush website! Good luck 🙂
I’m trying not to start reading the books I chose for the read-a-thon, but it’s getting more difficult with each passing hour! lol

  8. Thank you for posting this, I completely forgot the Reading Rush was this week. Life is kind of hectic right now for me, but I’ll definitely try my best to get a few reads in. Have fun at the beach 🙂
