Reread, Rewrite, Burn Tag

It has been awhile since I did this tag and I always have a lot of fun when I do! This time I am going to use books that I have read in the first half of 2019!

THE RULES:

• Randomly choose 3 books
• For each group, decide which book to burn, which one to rewrite, and which to reread (like Marry, Boff, Kill).
• Repeat until you completed three rounds (or six) (or however many you want to do).

Round #1

Reread: The Water Cure by Sophie Mackintosh

There is something about this book that has made me appreciate it more and more as time has gone on. It is a very quiet novel but I think it has a lot of important things to say. There is a very ominous feel to the story, which is something I love in fiction! I know that this is a book that has mixed reviews, but I loved it!

Rewrite: Peter Darling by Austin Chant

I talk about my love for this book all of the time! The only thing that I would change is the length. It is such a short little novel, and while I think Chant accomplishes a lot in that time, I would have loved to live in this world a little longer.

Burn: The River by Peter Heller

This was an average read for me. I loved a lot of the man vs. nature elements, but I thought that the mystery was a little obvious and overdone. Heller’s love for nature is evident in his writing, and I appreciate that so much! I think I was just expecting something different.

Round #2

Reread: With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

With the Fire on High is my favourite YA novel and one of the few books I will probably reread in my lifetime. It is one of those books that I would recommend to absolutely everyone- it is just that special!

Rewrite: The Secret History by Donna Tartt

I really loved this book but if I had to rewrite it I would probably make it shorter. There were definitely moments where I thought that the story dragged and that it was overwritten.

Burn: The Wedding Party by Jasmine Guillory

This book was light, fun, and entertaining but I do not think that it is the best that the contemporary romance genre has to offer. I would have loved to have seen more tension and banter- it was not quite the enemies to lovers story that I was expecting!

Round #3

Reread: Recursion by Blake Crouch

I really debated between Recursion and Norse Mythology, but settled on Recursion in the end because I feel as though it is more original. Blake Crouch writes SciFi like no one else! This is a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat while also having a surprising amount of heart.

Rewrite: Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

It is hard to say what I would change about this novel because Gaiman did an excellent job of making these myths accessible. I think I might have just made it a little bit longer and would have included to more myths. I could read about Thor and Loki’s antics for many more pages!

Burn: The Last Romantics by Tara Conklin

I can see why many people adored The Last Romantics, but something about it just never clicked for me. The first half was fast-paced and I was really in to the story, but the second half dragged and I couldn’t understand the characters’ motives. Conklin certainly does some interesting things in this novel and I would read more from her!

Round #4

Reread: Normal People by Sally Rooney

This was an easy one considering that there are very few books that would be out Normal People. It just so stinking good! It is one of those books that had the potential to be really boring but it wasn’t. It is an honest look at relationships and how one person can be the right and wrong person all at once.

Rewrite: Say You Still Love Me by K.A. Tucker

This was my first K.A. Tucker book and I really enjoyed it- especially the chapters set in the past where the characters first meet at summer camp. I would make some changes to the present day chapters particularly when it comes to the romance. There was some behaviour that was borderline stalking in my mind.

Burn: Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren

I hate to say this but I was disappointed by this book. I recently read and loved The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren and I wanted to read more from them. I do not think that Josh and Hazel was a good place to start. A part of me was hoping that the characters would remain friends, and the ending left a bitter taste in my mouth.
