Far From the Tree by Robin Benway
I instantly knew what book I was going to chose for the letter “F’. Far from the Tree is one of my absolute favourite YA novels ever! It is an interesting look at sibling relationship, and at the bond that can be formed even when they do not grow up together. I was moved by this novel and it is one that I recommend to everyone.
Ghost Wall by Sarah Moss
What Sarah Moss accomplished in so few pages is astounding to me! Ghost Wall is one of those books that I will forever think about and will continue to recommend. I will always remember how it made me feel, which a lot of the time was pure anger at the main character’s father and the other people who enabled his behaviour. It is a little book with a lot to say!
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
Homegoing in the novel that made me fall in love with multi-generational stories. It will make you reflect on your ancestors, and how their journeys have lead you to where you are today. There is a quote from Homegoing that I would love to share with you that perfectly sums up the core of the novel-
“We believe the one who has power. He is the one who gets to write the story. So when you study history, you must ask yourself, Whose story am I missing? Whose voice was suppressed so that this voice could come forth? Once you have figured that out, you must find that story too. From there you get a clearer, yet still imperfect, picture.”
I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
I’ll Give You the Sun is another one of my favourite YA novels, and it is no coincidence that it also focuses on sibling relationships- those tend to be the YA novels that I gravitate toward. Jude and Noah are equally compelling and unique characters and I enjoyed reading both of their perspectives. I also thought that the book did something unique in telling the story in two different timelines, with Noah’s story being the early years, and Jude’s the later ones.
Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren
‘J’ was a tough letter for me as I didn’t have many books to chose from. I have to admit that Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating was not one of my favourite books. I thought it was fast-paced and entertaining, but I had some issues with it. I didn’t think that the main characters had a lot of chemistry and part of me wanting them to just stay friends. I was also not happy with something that happens near the end. If you are looking to read Christina Lauren’s novels, this is not where I would start!
What books would you recommend that start with the letters FGHI or J- especially J?
Far from the Tree is incredible! I didn’t expect much when I first picked it up but it completely blew me away

I’ve actually got Josh and Hazel on my tbr so I’m thinking I may need to lower my expectations. Think you’re the first I’ve seen who didn’t love it.
J is definitely a tough one, I’d be inclined to go for Jane Eyre inspired Jane Steele or maybe Just One Damned Thing After Another.
Josh and Hazel is a quick read. I think it’s good if you have read other Christina Lauren but it’s not their best!
