First Impression Friday- Norse Mythology

First Impression Friday is hosted by J.W. Martin.

First Impression Friday will be a meme where you talk about a book that you JUST STARTED! Maybe you’re only a chapter or two in, maybe a little farther.

Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions and predict what you’ll think by the end.

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

I am listening to the audiobook of Norse Mythology, which is narrated by Neil Gaiman himself, and I am really enjoying it so far. There is something about Gaiman’s voice that is so soothing and captivating. He is one of those people who could read the phone book and I would be entertained! It also doesn’t hurt that the novel itself is very interesting. I am only a few stories in to it, but each of them have gripped me in their own way.

I think what Gaiman is trying to do with this novel is quite interesting. He is taking Norse myths and making them feel more modern. I am not well-versed in Norse mythology, so I would be curious to know how close he sticks to the original tales. I think most of us know of Odin, Thor, and Loki from the Marvel universe, so I am loving learning more about them!

I am so glad that I am finally reading another Neil Gaiman novel. I love his writing and I am hoping that this book will compel me to pick up more of his work, specifically American Gods, which has been on my shelves for YEARS!

Have you read Norse Mythology? What is your favourite book by Neil Gaiman? I have only read The Ocean at the End of the Lane!kkbLogo

  1. I haven’t read it, but I’m planning to when I buy a copy of it. I love reading books that feature a different mythology.

  2. I really enjoyed Norse Mythology! I think The Ocean at the End of the Lane has been my favorite Gaiman book so far, but I haven’t read many yet. I didn’t like Stardust as much (very episodic) but loved Coraline as a kid. I need to read more!

      1. I have not seen the movie yet, but in that case perhaps I should! I did find the story interesting, just struggled a bit with the way it was told, which probably comes down to personal preference. I hope you enjoy it! 🙂

  3. Is it a reinterpretation of the original mythology? Similar to American Gods? Or is it the entire text of Norse Mythology. It would be interesting if it was the former.

  4. I loved Norse Mythology! I bet it’s fantastic to listen to the audiobook if it’s read by Neil Gaiman himself. American Gods was the first book I read of his, I really enjoyed it. Hope you do too when you get around to it!

  5. I’ve had so many Gaiman books on my shelves for so long, including this and American Gods. I really just need to jump in and read them!! I think I’m just scared because I love Neverwhere SO MUCH that I’m worried his other books won’t compare and I’ll be disappointed. (The aim, as with all superhero movies, is to go in with the lowest expectations and be blown away!!)

  6. I really liked this one on Audible – and it did prove to be a great stepping stone into finally reading American Gods (which was kind of awesome) 🙂 Enjoy!

  7. Neil Gaiman is one of my favourites authors! I’m thinking of rereading this one soon but doing it by audio because lots of people have said that he’s a fantastic narrator!
