April Reading Check-In

At the beginning of the year I wrote a post talking about all of the reading challenges that I will be participating in in 2019. I thought it might be fun to update you every month to let you know how it is or is not going!

Goodreads Challenge

Last month I upped by Goodreads challenge to 90 books for the year.  I managed to read 11 books in April which brings my total to 49.  Goodreads is telling me that I am 20 books ahead of schedule so I guess I could raise my challenge even more but I like to have that cushion just in case I get in to a reading slump or something comes up in the future.

Total: 49/90

Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge

An Epistolary Novel

Lady Susan by Jane Austen

91582

I do not think this book would have worked if it was told in any other format.  The letters added to the drama and you truly felt like you were in on the gossip!

My Recommendations:

84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chobsky

A Comic by an LGBTQIA Creator

Lumberjanes, Vol 1. by Noelle Stevenson

22554204

Lumberjanes is just as sweet and as charming as everyone says that it is.  I can not believe that I waited this long to read it.  I am looking forward to continuing on with the series and seeing what the characters get up to next!

My recommendations:

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

Through the Woods by Emily Carroll

2019 Beat the Backlist

I did better this month than I was expecting! Out of the eleven books that I read, five were backlist.  That is almost half, which has been my pattern lately.  I think I will be happy if at the end of the year about half of the books that I read were publishing in 2018 or earlier.

2019: 6/11

2018: 0/11

2017 or earlier: 3/11

Backlist Total: 3/11

  1. It seems like you have been having a great reading! How do you keep track of all of your challenges? I can mostly keep track of Goodreads, but am terrible at remembering all the others, lol…

    1. I really have! The Book Riot challenge has a print out to keep track of each prompt which has been helpful. To be honest I just kind of wing the backlist challenge. I haven’t actively been trying to read 50% backlist but it has just been working out that way!

  2. Go you! You’re having a great reading year. Yeah, Goodreads is telling me that I am 44 books ahead of schedule, so I should probably adjust my goal. Obviously 75 books is too low for the year when I’ve already read 70. But I keep telling myself that now I can focus on reading some of the huge epic fantasies I’ve had sitting on my shelves for so long.

      1. I declared 2019 as the year of Big Books and for a few months I was reading at least one lengthy book each month. But I didn’t read one of the books on my list last month, so now I want to focus more on them. Though there are a lot of great upcoming releases that I’m eager to read as well. Bookworm problems.
