I have said it before and I will say it again- I am horrible at completing series. It does not matter how much I love that first book, it will take me ages to get to the next book in the series if I ever actually do get to it. I know that I am not the only one who is like this and I am sure there is the potential for an interesting psychology study in that somewhere.
Golden Son (Red Rising #2) by Pierce Brown
I read Red Rising around the same time I started this blog and I really loved it. There is so much action and political intrigue. The characters are also very memorable. I can not believe I read this book almost two years ago- it feels like just yesterday! I have been saying I want to read the sequel ever since… and I own it so really there is no excuse.
The Girl in the Tower (Winternight Trilogy #2) by Katherine Arden
The Bear and the Nightingale is such a beautiful and atmospheric book- one of my favourites! The ending was really interesting and I am so curious to see where the story goes in The Girl in the Tower. I have a feeling it is going to be completely different from The Bear and the Nightingale. I have only heard good things!
Thunderhead (Arc of a Scythe #2) by Neal Shusterman
I read Scythe last summer and it was a ride! I loved it much more than I was expecting to. It is very original and raises some interesting ethical questions. It also has one of the most memorable villains I have ever read. The third book in the series, The Toll, comes out in November and I would like to read Thunderhead before then.
A Closed and Common Orbit (Wayfarers #2) by Becky Chambers
A Long Way to Small Angry Planet is one of the best books I have ever read. It is the SciFi novel that I judged all of the other SciFi novels against. I have heard mixed things about the other two books in the series but I think it is almost impossible for them to live up to the first book. I will have to go in to A Closed and Common Orbit with lower expectations. That said, there are a lot of good ratings on Goodreads!
Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows #2) by Leigh Bardugo
I have a feeling that I will get a lot of comments telling me I need to read Crooked Kingdom! I know! I thought that Six of Crows was really fun and I want to read more from these characters. I have been told that the sequel is even better and I am so ready for that. Is it strange that I kind of want to save this book for next fall/winter? There is something about this duology that makes it perfect do read during dark and dreary weather. Maybe I will wait for a rainy day!
Are you good at finishing series? If so, how? I need tips! If not, why do you think that is? It is an interesting phenomenon and I am curious to see if anyone has an theories.
What sequel do you still need to read?

I’m reading Thunderhead right now and really enjoying it! I didn’t really get into Scythe until the very end, but the ending was enough to keep me going. Although now I’m regretting starting it NOW and I’ll have to wait for the third book!
It’s so hard to read a new series knowing the next book won’t come out for a year. I’ve been trying not to start too many new series lately unless at least 2 books of the series are already out and it’s being finished soon. Unless its by an author I love and will read everything they write, but for newer authors, unless it sounds SUPER good, I usually hold off if I can. I just can’t keep so many series straight anymore, so I like standalones these days. Or duologies!

I completely agree with that. By the time the next book comes out I forget what happened in the first one or I’ve moved on to something else. I’m definitely a standalone person and I think there needs to be more duologies!!
I feel like duologies are the perfect mix of standalone and trilogies. Its just enough when you want more, but not too much of a commitment! I can remember what happened in 1 past book maybe, but 2+ is pushing it sadly.
I often find that most trilogies would have benefitted from being duologies. The second books often feel like fillers!

Oh wow I hope you get to some of these! those are some of my favorite books haha. The Winternight Trilogy is one of my Top 5 series and Thunderhead is MINDBLOWING. But since the last books release date is up in the air I don’t know what to do with myself. It’s so hard to get back to series. I will usually read a different book then come back to the series to take a break and let myself get more excited for it.

Well, the release date is! I think there was some news that it’ll be in November, but nothing set in stone.
It is out in October (in the states).
I also need to get to The Girl in the Tower. It’s a book that I definitely want to get to this year. Surprised I haven’t read it yet since I loved Bear as well. Hope you get to all your reads!

Your list of sequels looks exactly like my would have looked 😀 Although, I did read the 2nd book in the Bear and the Nightingale series, and need to read the 3rd one. And I still haven’t read Scythe.. I keep staring at it sitting on my shelves, but always pick up something else (for some reason) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Winternight is currently my favorite series of all time! SOOOO good! So magical! Red Rising and Six of Crows are both series on my tbr list! I’m going to have to check out these other series on your list!
I think Winternight has the potential to be my favourite as well. I think I’m just not ready!!

Snap! The Girl in the Tower – definitely need to read that asap! I bought Six of Crows *and* Crooked Kingdom over the weekend so I’m really hoping I like Six of Crows as I’ve already gone ahead and purchased the sequel!

I loved Thunderhead and Crooked Kingdom, so excellent! A Closed and Common Orbit was also great; I need to read Record of a Spaceborn few, I bought that last year and haven’t read that yet.

Golden Son remains my favorite Pierce Brown book so far. But I think I’m in the minority who preferred Six of Crows to Crooked Kingdom- which I still found worth the read, just not as strong a favorite.
I used to be better at keeping up with sequels but in recent years I’ve gotten into the habit of “taking a break” between books, which sadly often turns into quite a long break indeed!
That is good to know about Crooked Kingdom. The series is so hyped that I try to go in to them with lower expectations because it seems impossible to live up to!

I’d definitely wait a bit on Thunderhead until closer to the release of The Toll. It ends in such a way that it’s kind of torture waiting for the next book to come out.

I always try to finish a series but am not always successful. I’m close to finishing the Winternight trilogy, though, and I loved The Girl in the Tower. It certainly is different from the Bear and the Nightingale but it’s still just as magical.

It took me FOREVER to read Six of Crows, but I finally did it. I ended up reading Crooked Kingdom almost right away, because I knew if I didn’t then chances would be high that I didn’t get around to the sequel anytime soon haha. It was really great though!
